Drink up, dreamers, you're running dry. #plutoisaplanet It's OK, I have an Astrophysics degree. he/him Repost = Endorsement of post (not necessarily poster) without comment Quote post = Emphasis, refutation, context, or interpretation

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

Y'know what would slow down AI development? Fines for every instance of copyright infringement equivalent to what the RIAA had courts impose on people who shared MP3s. That one's for free, Sam.

Gnomon seems to be the biggest disconnect of quality and notoriety in SF of the last 15 years I can think of. Sure, coming out the same year as the finale of the rightly lauded Broken Earth trilogy by SFF titan N.K. Jemisin didn't help, but I still can't believe it didn't get any major nominations.

I don't think @nickharkaway.com needs help from me, but I find his GNOMON underappreciated in SFF circles. It's an absolutely brilliant Inception-y mystery/thriller thing, one of the best SF I've read in years.

Given the outrageous, dangerous, and outright false statements made about how the polio (and other) vaccine was a "fraud" (at the Children's Health Defense conference), here's a reminder of what a massive success it was. RFK Jr. & his minions must be stopped from destroying the US healthcare system.

Graph of the number of cases and deaths from polio from 1910 to 2022, showing how polio completely disappeared after the introduction of the vaccine -- one of the most important health advances of the 20th century. Data from the US Public Health Services; the Center for Disease Control.

"the largest theft of labor in human history" "LLMs are a product that destroys its supply chain" Every poor sucker on the hook for millions because they were sharing MP3s shows that individuals get the unlubed dildo of consequences when Microsoft, OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and others just skate.

Eye popping. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft. Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1

I'm trying and failing to compose a coherent response to politicians who say they "oppose transgender ideology in schools," when the only trans "ideology" that matters to me is that trans people exist, trans rights are human rights, and that these assholes should leave trans kids the fuck alone.

@nebula.tv is it not possible for there to be a point at which a good functional design can be left alone? I don't want "theater mode" to fill the whole browser window. I was happy when it just used the full width. Can I get that feature back?
