Was bummed to discover yesterday that a glitch is preventing me from ever completing a collectible sidequest in the video game I'm playing, but on the upside the fact that it's still my main source of disappointment a full day later means that things must be going okay for me in life otherwise.
I'm just gonna say: it somewhat baffles me that people who are understandably skeptical of opaque LLMs as legitimate sources of information will suddenly go full on "the computer KNOWS" when they are using opaque tools to "detect" AI. The computer does not know.

I had missed the news that the remake of Myst was now playable on the PS5, and I think I know what game I'll be playing next when I finish with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. (I played the original Myst on PC in the 90s and haven't ever revisited it, but have fond memories.)

Barnes & Noble was having a half-off sale on select Blu-rays and I couldn’t pass up these classics.
Finally had a chance to watch Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender last night, and I thought it was fantastic. Beautifully animated, and narratively and design wise it serves as a nice evolution from the original series as well as a bridge to the Korra era of the later show.
Today is the birthday of cartoonist Jackie Ormes (Aug. 1, 1911-Dec. 26, 1985), the first Black woman to create a newspaper comic strip that was read nationally in the US. She created Torchy Brown in Dixie to Harlem, Torchy in Heartbeats & Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger. Patty Jo became a toy doll.

We went into Spider-Man: Brand New Day blissfully unspoiled and with no expectations, and enjoyed the hell out of it. (Muting all relevant terms on Bluesky for the last few days probably didn't hurt...) I almost waited for this one to come to streaming, and really glad that we didn't.

When Division 12 was first mentioned in the last season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds my ears pricked up, but now that we have a better idea what they're all about I definitely want to see more of them. A spinoff TV show seems highly unlikely at this stage, but it's perfect for a novel or comic!

Recently a couple of writers whose work I formerly respected have admitted to using Chatgpt "for research" and I honestly can't get my head around it. Use Wikipedia for research? Absolutely. Read a fucking book? Golden. Consult the hallucinating autocorrect? Um, why the fuck would you do that?
This right here is why I want us to honor more people with the Eisner Hall of Fame while they are still alive. Honoring the dead is nice. But it can't make them happy. Honoring the living is infinitely better.

Re neurodevelopmental conditions: diagnoses are increasing, but people aren't faking it. They were always there but not diagnosed--perhaps they couldn't access diagnosis, perhaps they were invisible because compensating, which came with acute anxiety (and frequent burnouts and mental health crises)

Today the project I've been working on for a few weeks now graduates from the cheap spiral notebooks that I use for quickly scribbled notes and brainstorming to a nicer hardcover notebook that I can work in long term (and in which my penmanship is always unconsciously a lot cleaner).

Woke up to the sad news about Glen Hansard. A phenomenally talented musician whose work meant a lot to me over the years, gone far too soon. I often think about this story he told about meeting Van Morrison when he was still a young busker, and I think I'll listen to him tell the story again today.
