Arguments for taxing gas often go something like this: "Tax gas to help pay for public services and infrastructure." The problem is that this narrative can create a political disincentive to phase out some of our most harmful industries, from gambling to fossil fuels.

Taxing gas exports

Should Australia tax gas exports? And if so, to what end? Australia’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports are a major topic of debate at the moment. Much of that debate involves clickbait and misinfo...

Opposition to nuclear energy has helped lock in fossil fuel use. Opposition to cellular agriculture risks doing the same for animal agriculture. Behavioural & system change matters. But blocking technologies that reduce environmental impacts & make change easier for people delays progress.

This week, @marklynas.bsky.social is joined by @georgemonbiot.bsky.social to explore a new framework for understanding environmentalism. George argues there are three distinct & frequently conflicting philosophies: Green Liberationism, Green Pragmatism, & Green Social Nostalgia. 🎙️ Listen below.

This was a great discussion. I would definitely align with George and Mark in being a Green Pragmatist with strong Green Liberationist principles.

"Help me" - Liberal Senator Andrew McLachlan. Senator Andrew McLachlan asked if all this disinformation on climate change is occurring, why isn't my party in government? Ironically acknowledging that his party represents an anti-scientific policy agenda on climate change & often on energy.

Veteran financial journalist Alan Kohler captures the reality: if Australia is serious about growing the economy, protecting our standard of living, and tackling the climate crisis, the Albanese government must put dogma and politics aside and finally accept nuclear energy as part of the solution.

Olkilouto could power roughly 5 million Aussie homes each day - emissions free. The first 2 reactors began operating in 1979 & 1982. For over 40 years they've been providing clean energy. Planned to operate until 2038, with plans to extend that further. Nuclear offers decades of clean energy.

Here's @andrealeong.bsky.social report back on tasting the future of food. Cultivated meat allows us to enjoy the foods we love without needing to slaughter animals - reducing animal suffering, environmental impacts, and threats to public health such as animal borne diseases like bird flu.

The future is here and our President @andrealeong.bsky.social is on her way to taste it! Australia has just approved its first cell-cultured meat product for sale. This is incredible news for animals, people and the environment!

Why is the National Party attacking Aussie innovation and people's right to choose what they eat? David Littleproud MP is targeting cultivated meat – a safe, science-backed way to produce real meat without harming animals or the planet. It’s a step forward, not a threat.

Countries in the Global North, such as the US, UK and Germany, are driving a massive injustice against people in the Global South. We're here to push back. Stay tuned for the launch of our latest campaign!

Hey @albomp.bsky.social, this is what a progressive, socially just energy transition looks like. UK Labour have made a major commitmentment to fund a 3.2GW nuclear plant to provide clean, affordable energy to millions of households. Call on albo to lift the ban: act.weplanet.org/overturn-aus...

Sizewell C getting this government's full backing is huge. It's six million homes powered. It's 10,000 directly employed jobs and thousands more in the supply chain. And it's 1500 apprenticeships for our young people. #GMB25

I don't think we should ban deep sea mining, as there may be circumstances where it does prove to be less environmentally impactful, however there should be proper global governance &safeguards to ensure we don't see unregulated exploitation & destruction of our oceans.

WePlanet@weplanetint.bsky.social · last yr.

Bad idea #12 'there’s nothing down there'. For World Environment Day we're challenging the idea that the deep ocean is a lifeless void which is can be freely exploit at a lower environmental cost than land based human activities. Watch or listen now: www.weplanet.org/podcast

The NEM last night was 75% fossil fuels, even with >1GW of battery discharge (Dark Blue). I won't pretend nuclear will solve our problems this side of 2040, but the variability of wind & solar puts our climate goals at risk, especially as demand for electricity rises as we electrify our economy.
