This one's free for the taking: I do hope someone is studying the Vampire: The Masquerade edition transition that's unfolding presently. The playtest seems a fine opportunity to study participation, how D&Dism is resisted, and how consensus/community around themes/titles are maintained.

Your email finds me yearning for the projects that aren't on a swiftly encroaching deadline, but we both know this to be illusion, don't we, my friend? All will be consumed by the calendric hegemony.

D&D surely is the lingua franca of Actual Play, just like English is the linguistic lingua franca of Actual Plays. That doesn't mean you can't introduce people to new languages. Just like "actual" languages, the more TTRPGs you "speak", the more colorful your experience in the hobby will be.
