High Velocity – Mountain Racing Challenge (Saturn) (1996) 1/3

The first of the Touge series of racing games developed by Cave and published by Atlus, it offers three courses inspired by real mountain pass roads in Japan, with fictional cars only designated as Type A, Type B and so on bud also based on real vehicles.

Here we have the black Type A, based on a fourth generation Nissan Skyline GT-R, driving down a mountain road with a kinda steep downward slope, going under some concrete arches with the night city glittering in the distance, based on the roads of Mt. Tarumi in the Kantō region.

The blue Type D, based on the Mazda MX-5, driving through Hakone, a mountain resort in Kanagawa Prefecture, near Mt. Fuji and past an Atlus owned gas station, expanding their business to other venues. A few cute pixel art people are standing nearby, including a dude in a red shirt and blue pants, a redhead guy in a green shirt and jeans and a schoolgirl with a blue dress and white and blue uniform.

Probably the game's most impressive feat is a long draw distance and a cool track design that really feels like you're driving through a winding mountain road with lots of verticality, feeling almost like you're playing WipEout. It also lets the players drive through the three courses in regular and mirrored mode and at different times of day, showing the snake-slithering Mt. Tarumi road here near sunset while driving the green Type C, based on the first generation Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.

The Type B, based on the Honda NSX, driving down a dirt road as it bumps up and down, leading into a tunnel marked with a black and yellow stripy construction pattern with a few adorable cube-shaped houses on the right side in white, pale pink and creamy beige colors.
