But this has not quieted criticism from advocates, who have long charged the commission is too deferential to the needs of the utility companies. They’re urging the council to block the reappointments of Trabue and Thompson—both of their terms expire later this year. However, many environmental activists would like to see new appointments held until a new mayor and council are elected. (Allen said he’s withholding judgment on that request, for now, but noted he is hearing overwhelming frustration from residents over the commission’s leadership.)

“We need a commission that’s actually going to move forward planning for a managed and clean energy transition in the city,” said Claire Mills, an organizer with the Chesapeake Climate Action Network. “And we just feel like the current leaders haven’t shown over the last four years that they’re really willing to take that on.”

In the meantime, Mills would like to see the commission more closely scrutinize Washington Gas’ plans for making the most badly needed pipe repairs first before moving on to full pipe replacements (an issue Beverly also raised in his dissent). The PSC will have several more decisions to make on the next steps of the pipe project over the coming months.

I would kill or die for Larry

A small operation in Oregon that hunts truffles with a trained dog has added an unpaid trainee. A cat named Larry accompanies the handler and the truffle dog into the woods every outing, works a patch of ground a little apart from them, and digs with tremendous confidence in places where there is nothing.
The handler says Larry has never found a truffle and shows no sign of understanding the assignment. He does not use scent the way the dog does and he does not respond when the dog makes a find.
He simply digs his own holes nearby and then inspects them. "He thinks he's on the team," the handler said. "He is emphatically not on the team."

I’d learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like Joseph E. Levine, on “The Producers,” said, “The curly-haired guy—he’s funny looking. Fire him.” He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, “Yes, he’s gone. I’m firing him.” I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of “Blazing Saddles,” the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager’s office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed “Blazing Saddles” from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, “No farting.” I said, “It’s out.”

That’s probably the most famous scene in the movie, the campfire scene.

It’s out!” Then, when he left, I crumpled up all his notes, and I tossed it in the wastepaper basket. That’s great advice for life.

It is. Don’t fight them. Don’t waste your time struggling with them and trying to make sense to them. They’ll never understand.
