KIRK LECTURE BOOK PANEL

Capitalism and the Future of Democracy
Wednesday, April 22,4:30 p.m.
Sturm Hall, Lindsay Auditorium (online and in person)

This panel asks: Is capitalism compatible with democracy? And how can we better understand the moral frameworks that sustain or challenge these systems?
Drawing on Lucia Hulsether's Capitalist Humanitarianism, panelists will explore how ethical ideals like charity, freedom, and justice, shape political and economic life through a religious studies lens. The panelists reflections examine how capitalism absorbs moral critique, often reframing inequality as ethical opportunity.

The session features brief reflections from Religious Studies and DU-Iliff Joint Doctoral Program students, a response from Dr. Hulsether, and a moderated Q&A, inviting the community to engage some defining questions of our time.
Panelists:
• Zane Johnson, DU-Iliff Joint Doctoral Program for the Study of Religion, Student

The answer is: everybody goes to jail. The post-Godhra trials went as far as convicting Modi’s right-woman Maya Kodnani but left Modi himself untouched. Once he corrupted the national government and judiciary completely, she was freed. Impunity for genocide is how Modi destroyed Indian democracy.

After politicized prosecutions, pardons for loyalists and other political manipulation, restoring the Department of Justice will require structural reforms after Donald Trump leaves office (via Bloomberg Opinion)

Yeah, so Collins told Trump this could cost her re-election, so they just pulled back, because they know that removing dangerous people from the country was never really the mission, it was always just about terrorizing anyone who stood up to Trump.

Maine Senator Susan Collins said Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem informed her that ICE will end the immigration enforcement surge in the state.

Homan is going to make everything worse. The only solution to this is to remove every member of the Trump regime from power as quickly and expeditiously as possible. This is abuser language: Look what you made me do.

Homan: "I begged for the last two months on TV for the rhetoric to stop. I said in March -- if the rhetoric doesn't stop, there is gonna be bloodshed. And there has been. I wish I wasn't right. I don't want to see anybody die."

Please repost widely. They are abusing and terrorizing children that look like my nephew and niece. We need to move @housedemocrats.bsky.social and @democrats.senate.gov to action.

Hey @housedemocrats.bsky.social and @senatedemocrats.bsky.social can you push to ban detaining kids and get all kids in camps released? This is a good, achievable goal that if the other side refuses, makes them ghouls. Honor these kids courage and free them. @schumer.senate.gov

Pam Bondi just sent a letter to Minnesota officials saying ICE will leave if the state turns over its voter database to Trump. Guess what? This has never been about safety or immigration. It’s a pretext for Trump to take over elections in swing states.

🚨"The Ku Klux Klan used to call themselves the invisible empire, and they wore masks, and they used to raid immigrant communities—much like ICE is right now," -one of THOUSANDS of Minneapolis ICE protesters marching in -10 degrees as part of statewide generals strike. LIVE NOW⬇️

Two women trained as first responders were abducted by three ICE agents. One of the agents starts seizing. The other two don’t know what to do. The women jump into action and save the agent’s life, only to be re-handcuffed and processed. www.startribune.com/detained-by-...

Detained by ICE, two women became first responders during agent’s seizure

The women say they guided agents through the emergency, later raising concerns about medical protocols, weapons safety and accountability.

BREAKING — Mayor of Lewiston, Maine posts on FB that ICE is coming to the city imminently. This confirms my reporting the agency is planning a surge in the city and state generally. Lewiston is home to a large Somali-American population, which made up 4.6% of the population as of the 2020 census.

Krasner: So, if what you have is a group of ICE agents, or even the military, coming into Philadelphia and committing crimes—assaults that are illegal, kidnapping, unlawful restraint, obstruction of the administration of justice—they can be prosecuted.

Next on “Shameful Displays of Fascism by Billionaire Trustees of Ivy League Universities” that would be easily thwarted with real shared governance. Anyone who thinks that university admins & trustees and Trump aren’t on the same side is a fool.
