#horrorwriterschat I always say "I need about 10-20 layers of abstraction between me and reality." As a writer and reader, I think that the metaphorical distance horror provides lets us contend with or face the real horrors while sparing us reliving our own trauma.

Many of my characters might be good people, but they've made bad decisions for good reasons and life has kind of kicked the shit out of them for it. Fuckups. They want to do better, and I think that comes from a personal space. A desire to do the right thing -- not the easy thing. #HorrorWritersChat

I literally became a horror creator to try, and succeed, at healing one of my worst traumas - life-long sleep paralysis nightmares. Outside of that, I have met people who were very shitty in the past, and have changed. It's one of my favourite themes to explore in horror. #HorrorWritersChat

Ah, how we actually "write what we know." I've actually based stories I've written on my life experiences. "Is Anyone There" was based on a ghost hunting session I had a few years ago. And "Natural Predators" was partially inspired by an actual epidemic at summer camp one year. #HorrorWritersChat

We Took the Long Way Home was inspired by a time in my life that involved a lot of long drives. The characters in it are loosely based on myself and a friend, though it's not a flattering portrayal of either of us. It's a spooky version of one of my typical Saturdays back then #HorrorWritersChat

Depends on the story. Sometimes much of their past doesn't matter, but sometimes their past is what defines them. I have an unpublished story about an old detective who stumbled onto some cult stuff when he was younger. That experience ended up defining the rest of his life #HorrorWritersChat
