Week 4 of construction. My sleep is broken from 8am power tool sounds, but my god, it’s starting to look like a bathroom. Chad is a dedicated volunteer site supervisor who has charmed the crew and multiple city inspectors. He’s only had to be rescued out of the floor three times!

One side of the framed in bathroom, where a nice deep soaking tub now sits on plywood subfloor. It’s fully plumbed and has a big arched shower niche framed in for storage. The little storage room on the other side of the bathroom wall, which has a low, sloped ceiling only suitable for short people. There’s a light fixture in this room for the first time in its 113 years of existence! It’s also set up for a small ductless washer/dryer combo unit.Chad the tuxedo cat lounging on the dining room table. There’s a fine dusting of sawdust on one side of his face because he was giving the city inspector a tour of the job site.

This week we started construction to add a second bathroom to the house. I’ve been planning this project for a decade but somehow never realized that contractors making demo noises in my house at 8am would mean I can’t sleep past 8am. Anyway, this is days 1 and 2 of progress.

The upstairs landing of my home yesterday, with most of the landing and the alcove beyond it divided off by a temporary wall made of two by fours and plastic sheeting. The light from the windows in the alcove is shining through the plastic.

My dad used to borrow favorite movies from me and forget to return them for years at a time, so after he died I retrieved a collection of my own DVDs from his house. Tonight we opened one, and the disc was missing. MOTHERFUCKER STILL WON’T GIVE ME BACK MY COPY OF HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE

Day two, the alcove and stair landing from the opposite direction inside the plastic sheeting. The alcove has been stripped bare of its plaster walls, exposing the bones of the original studs and the slope of the roof where the dormer ends. There are bits of newspaper and something fuzzy and gray as insulation still left in spots. Where windows once were, there is now only chipboard screwed in place.

The last protest I was able to attend was for trans rights, in fall 2019. It was my dad’s last protest, and the visceral sense of belonging from standing with him that day still feeds my heart when I remember it. If you’re out there marching today, I hope you take that feeling home with you.

An old white guy named Jim standing proudly on the Lake Street bridge on a sunny day, smiling broadly and holding a handmade sign that says “Support trans rights, support trans families.”

My spouse has had 2 ambulance rides in 3 weeks and is wearing a heart monitor. My sleep is fucked from stress + construction noise nextdoor. Still feel guilty not attending the protest. If asked “Where were you when…?” guess I’ll say we were home, surviving the shit our neighbors were protesting.

I need everyone to know that on the crochet subreddit the mods made a big post about how they're taking a week off because there was too much fighting/political posts. so there's currently no mods on r/crochet and people are being absolutely insane

Post from r/crochet that says "mods are gone. All hail Mr. Nipples" and its a picture of the most disgusting crocheted doll/creature thats pink and has a creepy smile and horns and big pink nipples. It's truly horrifying

Question for Minneapolis friends: I’m thinking of making coloring pages about resistance and community. One of the images that’s calling to me most is the objects left at community memorial sites—flowers, candles, signs, etc. Does that seem like a disrespectful/not okay subject for a coloring page?

In the midst of all the horrors, a fire last week claimed my niece’s family’s home in St Paul, including their 3 cats and her mom’s prosthetic limb. Her dad is in the ICU with a brain bleed. It’s not safe for them to leave their temporary housing. Please help if you can. gofund.me/4481a1d9e
