For someone who has not experienced a life of extremes, behavioral modification may seem frivolous. In fact, what strikes me about both Moskowitz's and Scherlis's essays is that they do not grapple with the experiential reality of being severely mentally ill. In general, anti-psychiatry discourse on the left assumes that most mental illnesses a) have social etiologies (which can be true for some, but is not entirely true on the whole) and b) are generally mild, as in the case of situational or ambient anxiety and/or
depression. In my mind and experience there exists a dichotomy between "mental health" (about which we should all be concerned, and which is kept in flux via ambient social and interpersonal problems or needs) and mental illness, a chronic health condition which requires, ideally, a tripartite treatment approach in the form of medication, psychodynamic therapy, and skills. Anti-psychiatry discourse tends to ignore the latter in lieu of the former. I wish bipolar disorder could be solely explained by the biosocial model, but sadly it cannot. (Though, psychoanalytically speaking, we all have manic-
depressive tendencies.)
