Shaka, when the walls fell

People are discussing how Halloween candy is so terrible these days. A reminder that alot of the candy we eat is made with women’s prison labor. Russell Stover’s factory in Kansas busses in 150 women a day via a convict leasing program to staff their candy factory.

A Russell Stover candy factory in Kansas has begun hiring incarcerated workers through a work release program, Eoin Higgins reports in his newsletter, The Flashpoint. About 150 women are bussed in from the Topeka Correctional Facility and paid $14 an hour, but the prison keeps some of their wages for room and board, taxes, transportation, and other expenses. When all is said and done, they take home less than $6 per hour. These deductions are high, but elsewhere in the country, they're even higher: In our May series on prison

Alex Ovechkin is finally on the board in his final NHL season, and goal No. 930 came with a lot attached to it. The Protas brothers. Goalie No. 190. Another NHL record. The age-41 club. And, naturally, DC’s 9:30 Club. @930club.bsky.social russianmachineneverbreaks.com/2026/10/11/a...

We can talk about re-engineering government <after> we: - Restore all the NIH/NSF funds - Restore at the Dept. of Education Title VI/FLAS funds - Rebuild USAID - Hire back as many of the fired federal workers as possible & replace those we can't with new talent as fast as possible - Etc. - Etc.

If the lessons Democrats (& democrats) draw from DOGE is “right idea, wrong implementation,” we are doomed. Everyone involved in the unprecedented crime that was DOGE needs to go to jail forever, & Democrats need to rebuild all of the programs & agencies first, not do digital management consulting 🤦‍♂️

DOGE overhauled the federal workforce and slashed government spending — moves that inspired nationwide protests and lawsuits. The backlash has given Democrats nationally an opportunity to reclaim the government efficiency mantle.

Not just abolish ICE/CBP, we need to end immigration detention bc the treatment of Haitians who were here legally is monstrous and unconstitutional; they are deprived not just of their belongings, safety, but of their rights Perpetuators need to be arrested for violations of civil rights

The “voluntary departure” orders are an absolute scandal. You detain someone illegally. Conditions are terrible. So then DHS deprives them of a hearing with an immigration judge or even a credible fear screening (after expedited removal order) by having them sign all their rights away to DHS

No mother should have to plan her delivery around a hospital's funding problems. While billionaires get tax breaks, rural Texas hospitals are struggling to keep their doors open, leaving families with fewer options for lifesaving care.

It was another exciting weekend in the NCAA and while there were many standout performances, such as Stryker Zablocki’s two shorthanded goal night on Friday, these three performances stood out to me. As always, I’ll throw it to you: what were some of your favourite games from the weekend?

Over the last decade, there were two hypotheses: H1: the political right genuinely cared about threats to speech from the left. H2: they were using campus speech wars to impose their values and silence dissent. Today, the answer is clear, but I can't find any of the H1 people admitting their error.

After years of championing "free speech," Texas lawmakers have enabled a dramatic rise of censorship in Texas universities, banning concepts, canceling courses and closing departments seen as "woke," and even using AI bots as censors. All in the name of freedom. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

In other professors’ syllabi, the bot flagged the Pulitzer Prize–winning play Angels in America by Tony Kushner, essays by the Mexican American MacArthur genius grant recipient Sandra Cisneros, and materials related to a class about the Holocaust (that professor was told to drop material regarding Nazi persecution of LGBTQ people).

Putting aside the ideological slant of the new rules, the bot, like many large language models, seems to “hallucinate,” or make mistakes. The AAUP lawsuit lists texts banned for their “sex-based ecofeminist framework” and “gendered ecofeminist frameworks.” These phrases might sound persuasively like academese, but the academics behind the lawsuit had never heard of them; these concepts “do not exist,” the complaint says. Matthew Pehl, a history professor at Tech, told me that he knew several people who’d received reports from the system that were “plainly written by an AI that had hallucinated content or confused content from one class to another.”

David Walker published An Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World in pamphlet form in 1829. It's one of the most important and influential abolitionist texts in U.S. history. Yet, very few people have actually read it and many people don't know who Walker was especially among young people.

Repeating my sotto voce refrain that I think we are very soon going to have to deal with the plain (but seldom spoken) fact that police are simply not under the control of the political leadership who command them on paper.

I hope Mamdani clarifies whether NYPD support for this action was at his direction or if the NYPD acted on its own; if the latter, why do they have that latitude and what is being done to reign in a rogue agency?

Mike Rogers is bought off — $5M from corporations to run his previous campaigns. He only cares about power and going back one more time through the revolving door to make another $14M.
