I wear three pairs of shoes: nice hiking shoes, cheap slip ons, and sandals. My sandals are broken and need replaced. My slip ons are also at the end of their lifespan. Internet advice says buy tennis shoes: New Balance, Adidas, something like that. What’re your favorite shoes for summer?

It’s crazy that English has prescription and proscription and one of them means “medicine your doctor recommends” and the other means “a list of people whose lives are legally forfeit.” But also perscription isn’t a word at all.

Finished Twin Peaks: The Return last week. It joins my mental pantheon of meta-entertainment experiences alongside “Endless Eight” from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and "Chester and Hester's Dino-Rama" (RIP) formerly at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

This. Blocked a few more people today - 'EVs aren't perfect'. Yeah, no sh!t, in a country where 1/2 the country has 0 access to transit and >1/2 obese, we need whatever tool is rapidly cutting GHG and AQ emissions. Along with giving up meat, installing solar, it's one of our biggest tools.

There is a lot of disinformation out there thanks to the oil industry about EVs but the science is clear, they produce a lot less climate changing and negative health impact pollutants than gas powered cars. If you need to drive, drive an EV if you can.

Got stuck on a family history mystery this week. A stranger messaged my on FamilySearch supposing us related through the Manning family, Manning being my grandma’s great grandma’s family. I figured it would be a quick lookup. Nope! #genealogy

Finished Batman / Green Arrow / Question: Arcadia last night. The stark contrast between the labor leader saying “all human lives have value” and the billionaire Utopianist saying “it doesn’t matter what happens to them; we’ll be fine” will stay with me.

Since folks are asking, this is at Minneopa State Park near Mankato, MN. In addition to its stately shithouse, there's a gorgeous natural prairie with an early stone windmill, a wild bison herd and a lovely waterfall.

Small herd of bison resting in a mudpit under a tree.Black-eyed susans and other native plants in the foreground, and the Seppman Mill on a hill.Minneopa Falls. A single arch bridge spans the run and visitors are looking at the upper and lower sections of the falls.

My dad recently said, about something else, "You can't expect a pirate to plant," and I seethed with rage that he did not drop this insanely useful metaphor ten years ago.

Looks like Letterboxd is on to the second stage of enshitification. They built a pretty nice app, we built a great community on it, and now they are selling us like serfs to whomever makes the sweetest offer. Serfs overstates it… we can and will just walk away when the experience inevitably tanks.

I like Letterboxd, but I could never understand why very smart articulate people were giving their writing away. variety.com/2026/digital...
