Ugh... Look, I am very much of the opinion that if one must choose, the only moral choice is to choose the lesser of two evils, but if the carrot you're dangling is "we can maintain a status quo that only barely works for some of us!" I have a hard time blaming folks who answer "no thanks, pass"
I was always a bit skeptical of the whole Treatlerite Discourse, but it is shocking and (hopefully) radicalizing how quickly all the treats have turned to ash since Trump got back in office. He and his goons can't even do bread and circuses right

Stadiums are universally bad deals, but cities and states can’t help but get suckered every single time, and team owners won’t pass up on billionaire welfare out of the goodness of their hearts. At least KCMO isn’t being taken for as much as the Chiefs bilked KS for, I guess.

Are we not allowed to laugh when the worst people in our public sphere are hoist with their own petards? If nothing else, this is a demonstration of what always happens in authoritarian movements: they discard people who have ceased to be useful. Let Milo be a warning to his fellows, at least.

The amendments Kehoe says were defeated by “special interests” went down in flames by 50+ point margins, but the party that pushed them has enjoyed supermajorities in the statehouse for more than a decade. Maybe some day Missourians will connect the dots, but I’m not holding my breath.

I've been pondering lately on what a social murder statute might look like, and when you start to run the numbers on how many people are dead so that "white collar criminals" can have a little more jingle in their pocket the Eighth Amendment starts to look like a real problem

Look, I have some quibbles — I suspect that holding staples artificially below market price could have some interesting knock-on effects, for one thing — but it’s at least doing something. My town tried to subsidize a privately-held grocery store for like ten whole minutes and then gave up.

This fundamentally misunderstands what online shopping has done to the marketplace. Instead of being being able to hold a product in your hands and get a sense of its quality, the only discriminators available are (usually doctored) images and price. A slump in quality was inevitable in that case.

And it turns out that what people really want is cheap disposable goods, not more expensive but higher quality stuff that lasts a long time.
We used to visit Tucson fairly regularly back when my wife was still on speaking terms with her family, so this has got me flipping through my photo archives of Mount Lemmon. Lovely scenic drive, though certainly not one that I would want to be making in the dark with no headlights 😱

Lemmon Recreational Highway with a dead alternator at 11:00 PM and all my lights were out. they had to have thought I was insane but they were very helpful
