I teach a HS class on American law. The first unit is on the rule of law & what makes it strong in a country. When I told them there is a direct connection between 9/11 and the flock cameras they hate they were hooked. Every single aspect of the rule of law is worse now than it was on 9/10/01.

I lived in Kingston for years. The statue was taken down after protests, day and night, by Indigenous activists. They were attacked/harassed at night. The plaque that explains its removal is defaced. Someone carved “white genocide” into it. Mark doesn’t mention how this is also Macdonald’s legacy.
All good achieved by “Canada” was done by working-class movements, often themselves deeply painted by colonialist attitudes. “We can learn the good and bad” is dialectics for children who fancy themselves scholars. Wanna learn lessons? Actually learn them instead of being a hack nationalist.
Saying “learning” is the middle ground is, in fact, a deflection. Canada does not exist without the state selling off Indigenous land, crushing sovereignty movements and starving Indigenous people en masse. It is the foundation of this country. All else, good and bad, was built on this base.
