He/They. Another member of the Xodus, living near London. Wants to believe as few false things and as many true things as possible. Life is complicated. Let's start by trying to be kind to each other.

Lots of the most prominent members of the Dem class of 2026 are now just stating plainly, over and over, that they feel no obligation to perform rituals of civility for odious scumbags. It's a tectonic shift in political messaging, and one with—it seems to me—real policy implications.

Q: I’m told that Vivek Ramaswamy left you a congratulatory phone call. Have the two of you spoken? Governor-elect Amy Acton: We can’t normalize behavior like this. It was so beyond the pale, so no, I have no intention of speaking to him. Leaders’ words matter and we need to hold folks accountable.

if I may be sappy: the 2024 guide is not the best document we've ever written, but it is the one I'm most proud of. it was 4 days post-loss, MAGA was ascendant, panic and despair were building. it was our job to tell people there was a path forward even if we could barely see it ourselves. so we did

Two years ago, Leah and I dropped the kids with my mom, went to a cabin in West Virginia, and wrote the new Indivisible guide. I'm not saying we got everything right, but reading this 1-page summary, I feel pretty fucking good about how this movement executed on a plan. New plan coming in 2 weeks.

1st page of 2024 indivisible guide.

🚨 IF YOU THINK CONGRESS CAN’T DO ANYTHING BECAUSE IT CAN’T CHARGE ANYONE WITH A CRIME, READ THIS. Democrats are set to control both the House and the Senate in the next Congress.

If an undergraduate wrote this in an essay I would simply write "No it does not. What on earth do you mean?" in the margin. A simply astonishing thing for a professional professor of philosophy at a very good university to have written!

Here’s a passage from a draft I wrote sometime ago that went nowhere. I believe this is far more accurate a summation of Stock’s thought than these glowing reviews: this is gender fascism, and it’s bad philosophy

Take, for example, the following passage from Kathleen Stock's anti-trans screed, Material Girls:
So: it follows from the logic of Butler's worldview not only that there are not two naturally pre-given, stable biological sexes, but also that there are no pre-given facts about natural selection. There is no sexual reproduction. There are no pre-given chemical elements or biological species. There is no climate change, at least not as commonly understood. There are no molecules, atoms or quarks. There are no viruses and no bacteria; no successful drugs nor placebos. Talking about oxygen as a cause of combustion is ultimately no more rationally justified than talking about the eighteenth-century concept of phlogiston (which was thought to reside in every flammable substance and be released as it burned). Talking about neurons as causes of behaviour is neither more nor less accurate, ultimately, than talking about bodily 'humours'. Creationism is neither worse nor better a theory than Darwinism.
There is no ahistorical, non-relative truth, in fact, nor 'accurate' scientific theory or representation.
This confused passage expresses the rising panic in admitting Judith Butler's work on the social construction of the category of sex. It is not a reductio as understood by real academics (Stock's argument begins and ends in this passage, merely asserting that if one category is socially constructed, all categories must be), but rather a psychic scream in abject fear: admitting a single category as socially constructed obliterates, in an instant, truth, justification, knowledge, representation, pre-given facts, science, scientific theories, chemical elements, biological species, molecules, atoms and quarks from existence.
In response, I note nations, money, and race are, in fact, socially constructed, alongside sex.
Look around you: all our categories have not evaporated into the mist, some statements are true and others are false, the sky is not falling down, our best scient…

The current editor of The Sun, Victoria Newton, was the first person to name Russell Brand ‘shagger of the year’. That detail is missing from its extensive coverage today about who enabled him to

Let me tell you about Russell Brand, as someone who helped the journalists who eventually exposed him. In 2013/4, Brand started to become interested in progressive politics. He said progressive things publicly, went on Newsnight etc. At the time I was involved in progressive grassroots work myself.

Ever-so convenient of the Daily Mail to neglect to mention that as soon as it became clear that the allegations against him were going to surface, RB reinvented himself as a right wing grifter/Trump fan. Because actually ‘the left’ - with our pesky ‘cancel culture’ - are less forgiving of SA.

‘Downfall of the swaggering sec predator fawned over by the left’ Daily Mail

Deeply dishonest from the Mail. The only group who "fawned over" Russell Brand once the truth was revealed about him was the Trump-supporting /GB News right, who have spent the past five years portraying him as a free speech, anti-woke martyr

Bild

i find it troubling the extent to which the progressive commentariat has settled on "this was an economy election." "this was about inflation." yes, people express extreme anger about the economy. but they are voting like trump just re-started the great depression. this should strike you as odd!

I know it doesn't change anything for the thousands who never see justice, but seeing Russel Brand successfully prosecuted in the same week Trump takes a kicking is a hopeful sign.

This "retribution" debate is maddening. No one is demanding revenge for bad tax policy or ill-considered deregulation. It's about accountability for open-air bribes, graft, extrajudicial executions, DOJ weaponization, unleashing state violence on immigrants, and killing people in the street.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com · 2d ago

El-Sayed: "As along as people see our politics as being about this red vs blue retribution game, all of us collectively lose. If you are focused on addressing the ways that bad decisions were made and then you can solve them, that's where I think accountability has to stand."

The more I think about this the more irritating it is. It’s not just feckless, it’s actively & entirely voluntarily adopting the inevitable Republican talking point that accountability for rampant criminality is just “getting even.”

MS NOW@ms.now · 3d ago

"The American people don't want us to get even; they want us to get things done on their behalf." House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who is now poised to become the next House Speaker, says that Democrats will focus on affordability concerns and not retribution after their midterm wins.

The richest man in the world spent more money than most people will see in a lifetime, only to lose a Senate race in Texas by double digits. This is a reminder that we must overturn Citizens United. But it's also a reminder that organized people can still defeat organized money.

It's so important to remember that given A) for many of us our only bargaining chip is our vote, B) it's not illegal to lie about who you're voting for, and C) the smart move is to make transphobic politicians scared of the consequences of their actions: The winning move is clear.

Assigned Media@assignedmedia.org · 4d ago

What are you doing, telling journalists you'll vote for transphobes??? For goodness sake, LIE! Spicy election day take from @ket.bsky.social, sure to live up your Tuesday discourse. assignedmedia.org/breaking-new...

Honestly in shock. @nytimes.com terminated the contract of romance fiction columnist Olivia Waite because she reposted on Bluesky criticism I and @markjacob.bsky.social had of the paper’s lack of coverage of the new rape allegations against Donald Trump. Details and a statement from Olivia here:

But in all seriousness for fuck’s sake vote today and don’t vote for fascists. We can go back to yelling at everybody who sucks next week. Time to make the white supremacists who killed our neighbors in the street and opened up foreign blacksite concentration camps feel some pain. Your vote helps.

In an hour, I will leave to go get in line to vote. I will be voting Democrat, top to bottom. Not because I like or respect everyone but because I’ve thought about the consequences of not doing that here in New Hampshire, and this is the best choice. These are the people I would rather fight with.

We tried "everyone is entitled to an opinion" for three straight decades and all we have to show for it is four thousand cases of measles and a death cult running the government. It's time for people who don't know what they're talking about to shut the fuck up.
