Obviously I’m on Mockingjay now, & marveling at how well the universe anticipates the role video & propaganda would play in wars like Syria & Ukraine. “Would a rebel army actually risk real resources to film a propaganda video?” Turns out absolutely yes

Made it to Catching Fire - truly, Philip Seymour Hoffman was one of the most profound ‘gone too soon’ actors of my lifetime

some specific democrats suck and they suck in ways that are detrimental to issues that you personally care about you know how you solve that once we are past the primaries? you elect even more democrats so that their votes are less important joe manchin couldn’t have done as much damage as vote 52

I suspect its a mix of Protestant frugality and socialist anti-consumerism that creates a need to transform one's desire to have nice things into a pragmatic decision. We need to learn to accept that its okay to spend one's money for one's personal enjoyment without any other practical motivation.

Abdul El Sayed's open-mindedness on the question of how to actually resolve the question of Palestine is one of the best indicators of his overall intelligence and sincerity. Policymakers in DC should adopt a rights-based approach which prioritizes ending the occupation and apartheid systems.

El-Sayed: "I believe in equal rights to peace, dignity, and self-determination, for Palestinians and Jewish Israelis alike... If that’s 2 states, I’m for it. If it’s 1 state, I’m for that. If it’s this 'land for all' model, ... or whatever they decide." www.newyorker.com/news/the-new...

"When white people began to migrate West there were all these kind of unemployed military guys running around. They're like, 'We have nothing to do. I know! We'll become like sheriffs and marshals.' And so they saw their job as…they would call it pacifying the West. It's really like a colonial job."

“From John Stuart Mill in the 19th century onwards to contemporary calls for Medicare for all, there is a longstanding strand of liberal thought that recommends the state provide generous benefits to citizens. "Marx once famously quipped that he wasn’t in the business of writing recipe books for the cookshops of the future. … Beggs, Burgis and Sunkara feel it’s the responsibility of democratic socialists to explain what their new society will look like and how it will be an improvement on the status quo."

I will say, I think that 'humiliation' here isn't just a matter of psychology - it is functioning a strategic purpose. If you are Iran, you want to demonstrate that interventions like this are political suicide so that future presidents (or this one again) don't decide to try another time.
