In the mid-20th century, auto and oil interests bought up electric streetcar systems across the US and systematically replaced them with bus routes and paved roads, funneling commuters toward private cars.

And you can’t blame the Tigers for wanting to get value back for a guy who almost certainly wouldn’t sign there when he becomes a FA, but the reason he almost certainly wouldn’t sign there is because they threw an offensive figure at him in arbitration last winter. That’s not the Dodgers fault.

The "economic problem" is, the multi-millionaire and billionaire owners of those teams are too cheap to invest in their product. They'd rather just lose and be subsidized by the winning Dodgers (to the tune of $180M!) and taxpayers. While idiot fans blame the DODGERS for what's going on.
BigSlim@imbigslim.bsky.social · 3d agoThe Dodgers’ luxury tax bill alone ($180M) is now higher than the entire payroll of the Reds, Brewers, A’s, Rockies, Pirates, Twins, Nationals, White Sox, Cardinals, Rays, Guardians, and Marlins. If you don’t think baseball has an economic problem, you’re simply not paying attention.
I just keep coming back to one question: If being 2 1/2 games out of a playoff berth with 51 games left is a selling position, what is the value of that playoff berth? Why are we letting 40% of the teams into the playoffs, deeply undermining the regular season, if this is how teams act?
