My postdoc is coming to an end, so I'm looking for work! Let me know if you, or anyone you know, wants to hire a philosopher of biology/cognition with a knack for cross-disciplinary work, a focus on autonomy + agency, and experience writing for the broader public (10+ yrs in sci/tech journalism).
Czech Republic president Petr Pavel, who is a passionate sports photographer with a focus on motorsport, today is one of the official photographers of the Hungarian GP.
I'm recruiting two postdocs (or potentially PhD students) to work on projects at the intersection of cognition, neuroscience, and AI (with a particular emphasis on mechanistic interpretability). Apply here: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F... and please share!

Important stuff. Meanwhile, Ahsan Adeel and his team at Stirling are actually *buidling* bio-inspired, energy efficient LLMs but, sadly, no one is paying attention to them (yet). ieeexplore.ieee.org/abstract/doc... aclanthology.org/2025.babylm-... arxiv.org/abs/2603.13453

Yay! Tomas Muller is probably the best student I taught in my entire career. This kid is going places!
👏 Congratulations to Klara Hulikova, Ilgar Gapagov, and Tomas Muller for receiving this year's Outstanding Achievement Award in philosophy for highest grade point average based on their coursework performance. Read more about each student and their MA theses. buff.ly/utxS8RU #philsky #weareceu
Online Now: Does reframing access and phenomenality advance consciousness science?
Does reframing access and phenomenality advance consciousness science?
In their timely opinion piece, Liad Mudrik et al. [1] propose to reconceptualize the longstanding distinction between access (A) and phenomenal (P) consciousness. Rather than constituting two types of consciousness, they argue, A and P should be reframed as two conditions that are jointly necessary for consciousness. This change, we are told, offers the promise of progress on entrenched debates between sensory and cognitive theories of consciousness and can move us toward theoretical unification.

1. This is a well-argued critique that highlights the weaknesses in Mudrik et al.’s reconceptualization. But we don’t need to retain two separate notions of consciousness (P/A) to preserve the essence of Block’s distinction. We don't need to accept AC as a self-standing kind of consciousness.

My reply to @liadmudrik.bsky.social et al.'s proposal that we should reengineer @neddo.bsky.social's famous phenomenal/access distinction.

I don't know how to explain to the people who pop up when creatives complain about "AI" to say there are legit uses for it just how much they sound like someone saying "Well actually fire is used to make bread" when people are talking about an organized arson ring burning down their fucking houses

Interesting attempt to map extants theories of consciousness. Fairly comprehensive, though I don't see eg Prinz's AIR theory. And some items do not seem to be ToCs (in other words, Claude sucks as a categorizer). #consci
