Listening to wall-to-wall coverage about escooters this week While I don't think this is a textbook moral panic as there is a real health risk But the leading cause of trauma deaths of children is motor car collisions & I've never seen comparable coverage of that catastrophe

This morning saw the launch of the Centre for Public Law at School of Law and Criminology Maynooth University The Centre was launched by Chief Justice O'Donnell and Prof Sergio Verdugo, and was followed by the launch by Oran Doyle of books written by Mariana Velasco Rivera and Conor Crummey.

Micheál Martin said yesterday sanctioning Aughinish would hurt Europe more then it hurts Russia. However new figures obtained by The Irish Times show that this year 83% (200,619 tonnes) of alumina exports went to Russia. The amount exported to EU countries was 149 tonnes (0.6%)

Glad I'm not the only one to think that the UKSC judgment in Dillon has put the UK in breach of its obligations under the Withdrawal Agreement. Remarkably, it has done so while arguing that this was necessitated by EU law itself.. What a legacy for the 'man who ended overreach'

This does not, however, have to be the end of the story. The UK Supreme Court is not the final arbiter over the UK’s treaty commitments. The Dillon judgment, in so traducing Article 2’s terms, breaches the UK’s commitments in the Withdrawal Agreement. Such breaches can be challenged by the European Commission in the deal’s Committee structures, and ultimately subject to arbitration.

The UK Govt made promises to NI over rights after Brexit and when the going got tough, denied they existed and got a compliant Supreme Court to help. The Dillon judgment plays into so many tropes about how little NI's place in "the Union" matters. Me in Slugger: sluggerotoole.com/2026/05/13/s...
