Unless Americans from every end of their political life take the time and effort to develop a more in depth understanding of history and culture of Mexico, Canada, Caribbean states and other nearby neighbours of the US, I struggle to see how regional trust in America and Americans can be restored
That even savvy liberal American intellectuals seem often unaware of how in Canadian cultural discourse Trump is viewed as a symptom of dysfunctional US attitudes towards neighbouring states rather than their sole cause is an indicator that the breakdown in relations will continue after he is gone

Using this table, the biggest MERCHANDISE trade deficit the U.S. has in 2026 is Taiwan ($59B) Vietnam ($54B) Mexico ($45B) and China ($30B) It's a joke that Canada is ripping off the U.S. He just wants to own us. BTW Trump's MAGA hats were made in Vietnam in 2016. Not sure where they're made now.

Brian Platt@brianplatt.bsky.social · 5d agoFor once Trump is actually using a roughly accurate figure for the goods trade deficit between Canada and the US, but wrongly attributes it to farm products. The deficit is due to the US buying Canadian oil.
Canadians will determine Canada's language policies. Canadians will determine Canada's cultural policy. Canadians will determine who will be Canada's trading partners. We will never be anyone's Belarus.
We have a plan to stand on our own two feet, find new trade partners and protect this beautiful country.
