I’ve been seeing this screen cap a lot lately, and as someone who built web sites for magazines starting in 2000, it’s not really accurate. Libraries are funded, and they pay for their books. The early internet was predicated on the idea that everything should be free. No one pays anything.

We got up early this morning to get in line to see the Uptown Theatre as part of Open House Chicago. We arrived an hour before opening time and the line was already 3 blocks long.

When I was 17, the orthodontist took off my braces, and made me a retainer. To take an impression of my teeth, they put trays off goo in my mouth and pressed them in. Tbh I get it. I was once pressured into joining the fantasy football league at work. I said I didn’t care about football and the person pressuring me said she didn’t either, “it’s just fun.” I didn’t end up doing it, of course, but it was work to refuse it.

But also that year I had this extraordinary level of support from my community. When I turned 44, @krevis.bsky.social and @lucyknisley.bsky.social drew these pictures of me dancing, which I have framed in my office, and it reminds me of that support.

Certainly the year I turned 44 was the worst year of my life, but I do feel that I am an outlier and my experience cannot be generalized (that was the year my husband died).

There's pretty good evidence the lowest level of happiness for adults in Western culture is around 45 (I am 44). I used to think this was about control vs responsibility (you get a lot more responsibility but less control), however there's also the element of "I haven't felt ahead in 10 years."

Last night I leaned in to give someone a goodbye hug and say “it was a pleasure to meet you”, but instead I said “it was pleasant to meet you”, which is a different vibe entirely

The boyfriend and I walked by a tattoo parlor the other day and were looking at the flash tattoos on the wall. One of them was Alfred E Newman as Mr Spock. Now, I can see getting an Alfred E Newman tattoo, and I can see getting a Mr Spock tattoo… but Alfred E Newman AS Mr Spock? That feels weird.
