Aussie nerd for games that waste many hours or make me cry. Will fawn over almost any animal. Annoying all my friends with a years-long guitar phase. A trifle in the danger zone. My rarely-updated vegan icecream recipe site: https://thechurningbush.com/
this will be funny to like 3 people but I’m one of them and that’s all that matters
Such good data, would love to see the equivalent for the parties over here. I suspect similar for young ON voters! I've been of the opinion for a while that talk about young people been driven to the far-right by economic precarity is misleading and that fascists are generally better off and well:
Among young men, sexism predicts support for Trump among young men. In 2024, Democrats *won economically precarious young men.* Trump won young men who held bad views about sex. In *particular,* Trump won those young men both sexist AND high-socioeconomic status. So... www.ymrp.org/polling
I've said this in some of our book talks, but as an advocate I think spending a lot of time trying to find common ground with "someone on the other side" is generally a waste of time. It's much more effective to identify latent supporters of the things you want in the world and get them to join you.
The best cure for ideological bias is find someone on the other side and go to lunch with them. Sometimes we disagree about facts. Sometimes we disagree about values. Figuring out which is which is fun part. https://newsletter.platypuseconomics.com/p/my-libertarian-friends-were-right
Paul Atreides as a character is spicy white-coded, so you might want to tone down the loathing.
And the Apes were ten thousand, each unlike his brethren, yet all equally hideous. Their likenesses any might behold or copy, but upon the Chain were inscribed the names of their lords. And many paid dearly to be numbered among them, ere the floor fell away.
Reading the Bored Ape Wikipedia page feels like how it must feel when people with pet reptiles read the Silmarillion
RBA policy, and the policy of neoliberalism as a whole is just this scene over and over ad infinitum

But hey, they died so the rest of us could have inflation below 3% rather than at 3.5%. A worthy cause.
Trying to pick what to have for lunch today, falafel wraps which we had yesterday, aglio e olio which just feels too oily and carby right now or texmex with homemade tortillas, guac from a perfectly ripe avo and this great habanero and mango hot sauce we have... I'm choosing texmex, you can tell.
i really can’t bring myself to care about AI anthropomorphism debates. “is AI thinking?” i don’t know. is a calculator calculating? questions for the philosophers. what’s important is that we put sam altman in prison.
Jake Tapper (moderating the 2028 Dem primary debate): Final question. Do you renounce the Western Massachusetts lesbian bar? Pete Buttigieg: I renounce it. Kamala: I renounce it. AOC: I renounce it. Gavin Newsom: I will be deploying the National Guard to Greenfield on day one of my administration.
Once it's had the Hildegard von Blingin' cover done people have no excuse (because they should have heard of it via said cover). Just for the joke of "Choosin' Wessex" alone tbh.

youve never heard choosin texas by ella langley? should we tell everyone? should we throw a party? should we invite gigi hadid? (that's a supermodel btw)
There's a lot of preamble that would be a thread in itself to explain how I got there but I was recently sitting on a hill atop a cliff at a fancy resort in Bali with a camera when I had a whole troop of monkeys walk right past me and I wanna share some photos!
It ys tyme for Tulip skeptics to face some difficulte trouthes. Tulips are the waye of the future. Yf you do not invest yn Tulips you are way behinde. Yf you do not teache your children about Tulips thei will not be able to compete on the jobbe market. Onlye Luddites dislyke Tulips.
It's hard to communicate to some of my American friends here how funny it is to an Australian that someone would do a romance scam pretending to be Scott Morrison, but with some help from my partner I've come up with the perfect comparison: imagine someone doing a romance scam as Mitt Romney.
An affection scammer using photos of Scott Morrison 🤣

My hot, spicy and much desired take on the "AIs can rationalise" argument is that it's depressing how quicker many are to ascribe personhood to computers then they are to animals. Perhaps the animals just need to be more sycophantic? We'll just train the cows, pigs and chickens to sound like LLMs.

My partner is currently annotating a protein sequence with the string FISHLASER in it and I just wanted to share that. There's also TAILGIRL in there.
I see this impulse over here a bit so it's not entirely uniquely American, but it does seem that to the American center/right the most offensive thing imaginable is even so much as implying that American lives are not qualitatively different to non-American lives.

Foaming dairy and eggs is second nature to us people with a baking hobby, it's easy to forget that the average person probably only knows how to make meringue and maybe one or two buttercreams. And whipped cream, of course. of course...
chat what do we think
Feels like we could do something similar over here, too. AusPost is a weird little QANGO sure but could still handle it, or we can just do it through another government service. Basically fits with my philosophy that anything the government requires it should provide.
I think it was @catelli.bsky.social who said that Canada Post should be directed to develop a public email system for Canada, assigning emails to all residents. Paid by taxes plus fees for premium services. Strikes me as both technically and politically feasible. Now would be a good time.
