As someone who lived in NYC on 9/11 I just have to say this idea of a "post-9/11 unity" is insane to me. It did not feel like a country that had *always* despised its largest city was "uniting" with us in our trauma. It felt like a nation of vultures descending on a carcass.

Hilton came from a very wealthy family. she was seen by her parents as disobedient and troubled, though, and so they basically kidnapped her and sent her to a school for discipline where she was (without her parents knowledge) emotionally, physically and sexually abused

the trans moral panic pushed by the NYT and Atlantic is about transphobia, obviously, but it's also about older wealthy readers believing that as adults they have the right to control their children's identities and futures.
