she/her. English literature, medievalist, singer in the band, recovering indoor cat. In both research and life, resisting being reductive about religion. I don’t speak for my institution, and it doesn’t speak for me. Expect posts about academic freedom.
I don’t want to get sucked into another round of odyssey discourse, does anyone know a good way to steer past it without getting lured in?
The wise oracle bowed her head. She spoke only these words:
when you break it down, every movie is either about spider-man, or not about spider-man 🤔
You can/should read Emily Wilson's latest take on the Odyssey, but I'm logging on to convey my hairdresser's reaction. She was AGHAST that Nolan, with his million $ budget, gave Matt Damon ONLY 6 hair extensions. As a result, his hair did not blow around properly, & that ruined the film for her.

The Trump admin is back with version 2.0 of its higher ed compact. The reason is simple: The first one failed. Compact 2.0 lacks egregious elements of its predecessor. That’s a victory & affirms that the answer to authoritarianism is organized resistance—not compliance. www.aaup.org/news/new-com...

I am both enraged by AOC pandering to MAHA and in agreement with this short thread
She’s going to sweep white suburban moms after all
There’s plenty to dislike about the way corporations operate. That they produce safe, effective vaccines and affordable food at scale aren’t part of that list.
Counterpoint: MAHA is a eugenicist scourge totally incompatible with any kind of solidaristic movement.
There is pervasive corruption across our healthcare and agricultural systems that defy party lines. I meet with MAHA activists because a lot of their concerns are bipartisan issues that major corporations paint as partisan. The fight isn't left and right, it's top and bottom.
Word to the wise: any president or board that responds to this letter without formally consulting their faculty and staff through established governance bodies and after a public comment period is abdicating their fiduciary responsibility. #MakeSharedGovernanceMatterMore www.ed.gov/media/docume...

I still maintain the secret sauce to making hit movies is giving a bunch of weird kids a reasonable amount of money to make something they're passionate about, and the suits don't like that answer because it makes the weird kids too important
I am very grateful to Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma for introducing me to the phrase "Zombie IP." It's not that IP is suddenly unpopular per se, rather that a certain properties have simply overstayed their welcome or simply never had a real fanbase to begin with

This nonsense about the printing press and universities is simply a different form of the "the Church enforced thought control in the Middle Ages" canard and says quite a bit more about what the speaker thinks about modern institutional surveillance and control than about history.
I’ve seen in two culture /higher ed magazines recently the claim that the printing press engendered a crisis of authority at universities bc anyone could publish what they wanted and people could learn things without universities. This is not true.

Senator Rand Paul publicizes the pandemic-era diary of Anthony Fauci, exposing the doctor's private thoughts during the global crisis. The government logs reveal a stark contrast between internal policy debates and his deep fascination with sudden fame.
What I hate about COVID downplayers is… you won okay. In the aftermath of humanity coming together to develop the most crucial vaccines of our lifetime & collectively sacrificing to save lives, we are now less safe, less vaccinated & less empathetic than ever. You won ok. Lay down your swords.
I genuinely cannot follow Lab Leak discourse, even when I've tried, and who am I to decide between these bewildering reports, diagrams, charts, fights among experts? but all that furor over who's "ultimately" responsible for COVID's origins seems to sidestep accountability for all that happened next
