📦 So this just happened. Complete accident, the person responsible shows no regrets, I guess I’m going to have to deal with it 😜 It does, of course, open up an awful lot of possibilities that weren’t available to me beforehand… 🧐 🎮 #VideoGames 🕹️

I've spent my entire life being warned that this was coming and wondering if humanity would see the light and fix the problem before it was too late. Kind of terrifying to realise that we're just about there, if not already past the point of no return.

"If the warming rate of the past 10 years continues, it would lead to a long-term exceedance of the 1.5 degree C limit of the Paris Agreement before 2030."

🎧 The one in which @danhartland.bsky.social asks “are we … perhaps especially as SFF critics, are we led too much by awards? Are we too interested in them?” I do find myself rather intrigued by SFF award lists 🤓 🪐📚💙 #BookSky 🦋 #Podcasts 📻

“Maybe this is getting a bit cynical. Maybe the publishers have figured out a way to market specifically to the people that give awards out. And they are focusing their fire there, and therefore it’s becoming less and less representative what gets shortlisted, what wins. And therefore the discourse that is then affected by these awards becomes less and less broad.”

🎛️ Crank up the volume, it's Critical Friends! 🏆 Uh-oh, it's some more awards chat. @abigailnussbaum.bsky.social and @amritesh.bsky.social talk to me about the Clarke, the Hugo, the Booker, the Le Guin ... ⁉️ What relationship between critic and award, award and reader? 🤔 Also: marketing. Again.

📋 I’m a paperback boy, rarely dipping into the world of hardbacks unless there is time pressure. So I maintain a wishlist of hardbacks that I check up on every now and then to see if a paperback is due. First THREE on the list were published in 2024, no paperbacks yet ☹️ #SadPanda 🐼 📚💙 #BookSky 🦋

📖 Started reading Kim Stanley Robinson’s “The Ministry for the Future” today. "Yes, you know. Everyone knows, but no one acts.” 😬 Grim reading in our time right now 🔥 It’s a chonky boi and may take m a while 🧐 📚🚀 #SciFiBooks 🪐📚💙 #BookSky 🦋

Back when I had Twitter I used to offer free headshots for low-income authors, not sure I have much reach here but the offer is still there. London or Birmingham (although I’m in Glasgow and Edinburgh at the end of Aug and can fit in a session. Will have lights so can be indoors).

🕰️ Finally heading back indoors at 10:30pm at night is a major reason that I am so far behind on my YT subscriptions (3-4w right now). Now I need to quickly decide whether to watch a couple of episodes or have an early night after being kept awake by noisy neighbourhood shenanigans last night 🥱

💬 At what number of followers do you go “I am not going to bother this person with a reply, they must get inundated with nonsense and they don’t want mine!” 🤔
