“DAC at the scale needed is mostly a fantasy” It is VERY USEFUL for scientists to say this out loud, as much as possible, since blind faith in carbon removal is one of the baseless ideologies justifying the continuation of fossil-fuel use among global policymakers.

It might have some marginal use in sopping up the last dregs of CO2 emissions (if that), but the main job is still to get emissions down by at least 90%. But however expensive it turns out to be, it should be the fossil fuel companies that pay for DAC,

Interesting how widespread subsidies and support for carbon capture and synthetic direct air capture are when not one peer-reviewed paper in the world shows, when the whole system and opportunity costs are considered, either reduces any CO2 from the air. Multiple papers show CC+DAC increase CO2.

To stop climate change, we need to cut emissions. There's absolutely no way forward without that. We also have to help support natural sinks -- essentially helping maintain healthy forests and healthy oceans.
Plus of course: water, which is not anthropogenic GHG, but implemented in the temperature feedback cycles. and some minor ones like SF6, ozone, NOx etc.
Dr. Jonathan Foley@globalecoguy.bsky.social · 4mo agoBasically, there are four big greenhouse gases -- CO2, CH4, N2O, and f-gases. And six economic sectors emit them -- electricity, industry, food & ag & land use, transportation, buildings, and other energy processing.
Might be time to bust out one of my favourite climate stories of all time: how BECCS was mostly a kind of model hallucination
David Ho@davidho.bsky.social · 4mo agoCan we finally agree that burning wood for energy is a terrible idea and won't be carbon neutral, let alone carbon negative, in our lifetimes? BECCS using wood certainly shouldn't qualify as CO₂ removal (CDR).
If you think BECCS (using wood as an electricity source, hoping to capture carbon) will save us, you should really read this paper.
