11/ And we shouldn’t expect that all airlines will be able to seamlessly negotiate these things every time. The union bears some shared responsibly in how this change happens. But that is what bargaining is all about.

10/ BUT it’s also true this is a departure from what was previously bargained by the same union before. It will take time for this structural change to work its way through the system across all airlines.

9/ The CUPE staff have now bargained on multiple occasions to structurally change how they are paid in order to adopt something akin to regular hours. Based on @abacusdataca polling it’s clear Canadians fully support this shift — it makes gut level sense to people. And biz shouldn’t fight it.

8/ A strike is not indicative of a bad employer. It’s the process sometimes needing more time and a change in the dynamics at the table. WJ made real concessions that will cost money — costs that consumers will bear. But public opinion also seems fine with that.

7/ The key here is to let the parties do their jobs — and bear the risks and accountabilities that come from that. It is also true that WestJet is not a bad actor here even if there was a strike.

6/ That serves no one’s interest and would arguably INCREASE labour unrest across the system at a time when we need more certainty for investment.

5/ This comes at a key time as Ottawa is looking at significant changes to the Canada Labour Code. The fact this was resolved fairly successfully is proof that the system works — it can certainly be improved but we should not move to dismantle hard won rights.

4/ That isn’t nothing and there are lessons we can draw from this experience — eg transparency of the offer was a meaningful step by the company without being provocative. That may point to the utility of more tools earlier in the process that aren’t about government imposed arbitration.

3/ The inconvenience for travellers is important — but that is what happens when both labour & management have things on the line and need to use bargaining to resolve issues themselves. The impact here is small from a macro economic perspective although on a human level there will be challenges.

2/ Unlike last summer’s @AirCanada fiasco 3 key differences this time 1) government didn’t get involved and make things worse 2) the company treated the issue seriously and tabled a strong offer before strike 3) everyone kept their cool. Even Danielle Smith said give it time
