Where does most excess heat from climate change go? The ocean. Nearly 90% of it over the past 50 years. This map shows 2025 ocean heat content vs. the 1993–2022 average. Orange = more stored heat, and that's most of the map. Read more BAMS State of the Climate highlights: buff.ly/Y18qfMf 🌍️ 🧪

This is whole story is horrifying, and as a journalist covering ICE flights, I was struck by this sentence: “We were shipped to Texas overnight from Los Angeles in horrible conditions that I won’t elaborate on in this letter.”

The province has ramped up resources to deal with evacuees encountering long wait times. I was not called upon at the press conference, but one of my questions was, in part: The whole point of Emergency Management is to be prepared for emergencies, so why didn't it have sufficient resources?

"For example, the panel heard that scientific advice structures across the country lost months during the pandemic as the evidence on the benefit of masking unfolded because the dominant clinical and public health perspectives were that masks in public settings did not work for COVID-19."

Dick Zoutman@dickzoutman.bsky.social · yesterday

Buried in one paragraph: the panel admits advisory bodies “lost months” on masking issue because dominant clinical opinion said masks didn’t work because they were missing aerosol expertise. This is the single most important line in the report but gets NO follow-up.

NEW: The NIH is quietly restricting funding for research that evaluates how public policy impacts human health. According to internal documents I obtained, the agency no longer considers policymakers "mission relevant" — a massive shift for the biomedical funder. My latest for @nature.com:

NIH limits funding for research on the health effects of public policy

US biomedical agency no longer considers policymakers as ‘mission relevant’, leaving dozens of grants in limbo.

Maybe this will finally get politicians to care about climate change: “The brutally hot summer is set to cost the EU economy €180 billion this year — that’s equivalent to roughly 1 percent of GDP, which is all the growth the bloc was expected to generate in 2026, according to new analysis.”

Europe’s scorching summer is erasing its economic growth, says report

Dutch growth is set to be almost entirely wiped out, and France could be pushed into a contraction.
