General Relativity is the ultimate in gutsy ad hoc adjustment of surrounding theories to accommodate a proposition you insist on. Einstein: “Light always travels at the same speed and it’s the fastest speed there is. I will literally bend your conception of space and time to make it come out true.”

[In a cave somewhere; the first stirrings of what would become philosophy of mind:] “Why I move but not rock? I make me move. Only other things make rock move. Why? Just because no legs?” Panpsychists [in the 21st century]: “Basically yeah; it’s all a spectrum.” 🤷‍♂️

Veronica Coan: “Daddy, do scientists just spend most of their time saying, ‘this is bullshit, this is bullshit, and this is also bullshit?’” Jim Coan: “Yes, my love, that is what scientists spend most of their time doing.”

Q: Will this book give me an existential crisis? A: While I cannot guarantee ZERO existential crises I can tell you that most readers find it “strangely comforting.” Also there are lots of jokes in the footnotes, if that helps.

Interviewer: what's your greatest strength? Me: i have exceptional hindsight Interviewer: that doesn't really help us Me: yes, i see that now

I saw some discussion of “antigravity belts” in relation to some game which allow a person to fly and I just want to point out that all belts are antigravity devices that’s what they do

Kant describing laughter as “an affection arising from the sudden transformation of a strained expectation into nothing” makes me suspect Kant had theories about humour in the same way Mary-the-colour-scientist trapped in a b&w room had theories about seeing red

sometimes I think about how weird music is. "ah yes, I enjoy listening to sounds sequenced in a specific way that triggers emotions in my brain." very normal

I really think at its heart philosophy is one giant battle, taking place over many eras and nations, between people who are basically pleasant bureaucrats and people who are sexy murder poets, and it’s both super important and super boring that the pleasant bureaucrats must win.
