Anti-draft evasion seldom survive the first corruption
Yan Matusevich@ymatusik.bsky.social · 6d agoIt's been a slow process, but Russia now has most of the mechanisms in place to prevent another mass exodus of draft evaders should another round of mobilization take place. Mobilization never actually stopped, of course, it has just avoided targeting certain privileged populations.

I analyzed dozens of reports from Russian municipalities and found a lot of fascinating insights about how Russian recruitment actually works. At the core, the recruitment machine is a multilayered system of quotas, going all the way from the Kremlin down to the smallest village.
1\ I'm gonna argue here that short-term profits don't really matter much. They can be fiddled by accountants. But the rest of the data say Russia's steel industry is in a disaster zone. Total Russian steel production at a "15-year low". Now down 12% vs 2021. It looks hilariously bad for them.
