It is extremely depressing to see how Iran's government has a shrewd understanding of America's interests and culture while the entirety of America's government thinks they are dealing with primitive sand people who will cower in fear from mean tweets and trade everything for shiny trinkets.

For those who wonder if this is important: Robledo is Spain's Radio telescope and deep space radio antenna. It covers 120 degrees of NASA's communications for anything currently flying around from Voyager downwards. It is also a pretty important part of Europe's VLBI. 1/

See the alternating warm and cold patches in the Northern mid-latitudes? That's the imprint of a quasi-stationary Rossby wave (i.e. oscillations in the jet stream). It's rare to see it so clearly in a monthly-average temperature map.

just got an email from my (former) chair that the university has acted & the state has approved the formal closure of my department. this was done without any faculty input on the decision or the process, & has ended a vibrant, growing (!), humanities department that won teaching and research awards

Anyway, happy Monday! The Dean is shutting down my department - Religion & Culture, the only 1 of is kind in the country & home to the innovative Major in Humanities for Public Service. There is no immediate budgetary or political pressure for this decision
