Every time I reread Virginia Woolf’s The Waves I love it even more. Also a fan of Sam Shepard, Kerouac, Dickens, Steinbeck, Capote, du Maurier, Willy Vlautin, Donna Tartt, the Backlisted podcast, film noir, Twin Peaks, Columbo & folklore. Portland, OR

New life goals having visited the home of Vita Sackville West. She had a writing tower (I will also need a lift and air-conditioning) and she and her husband had a library each and combined ‘extra’ one. Their collection included Sinclair Lewis - if more people had read this we wouldn’t be here.

“Every day their attention must turn, like the shine on a school of fish, all at once, toward a new person to hate.” - Patricia Lockwood, No One Is Talking about This

Every day their attention must turn, like the shine on a school of fish, all at once, toward a new person to hate. Sometimes the subject was a war criminal, but other times it was someone who made a heinous substitution in guacamole. It was not so much the hatred she was interested in as the swift attenuation, as if their collective blood had made a decision. As if they were a species that released puffs of poison, or black ink in a cloud on the ocean floor. I mean, have you read that article about octopus intelligence? Have you read how octopuses are marching out of the sea and onto dry land, in slick and obedient armies?

What am I inhaling when wildfire smoke closes in? Without being morbid. Someone's favorite cowboy boots, recipes written in a grandmother's hand, newly filled prescriptions, paper plates left over from a birthday party, an old end table no one liked, a shopping list pinned to the fridge, bird feed?

Trying to imagine our city council prior to charter reform putting on such an educational, informative panel discussion for the public.

Join me, sports economists @jcbradbury.com & @victor-matheson.bsky.social with co-host @councilormorillo.bsky.social on the economics of publicly funded stadiums. The term sheet is coming with limited information provided to us on the Moda Center renovations. Let’s discuss. zoom.us/webinar/regi...

Phillip Bodey of Saucon Valley Senior High School in Hellertown, Penns. Mr Bodey didn’t just teach me but stoked the fires of my curiosity and enthusiasm at every turn. I came to him incessantly with questions & he always had time to discuss them at length. He truly changed my life. He is missed.

Who was YOUR great english teacher (if you had one)? For me it was Hugh Epstein at Richmond college (RUTC). I hope he's well, wherever he is!

Disappearing into the field behind Borrodale beach in the north-west of Scotland are the mangled remains of a Churchill tank used for demolition training by S.O.E. agents billeted nearby.
