a small comic about my job

A four panel comic:
1. A drawing of a person using a screwdriver on a flat surface in front of them. A wrench and a bottle of some kind of liquid are nearby. Some text reads: “My day job involves operating and maintaining a big machine. I keep things cleaned, calibrated, lubricated.”

2. “My boss always refers to the machine as my mistress, and I always politely laugh.”
The same person lying on the ground, reaching into the machine, tools on the ground next to them. A speech bubble from out of frame reads ‘how’s the mistress?’ as the person replies ‘good! Ha ha’

3. “Honestly, I do wonder if he’s using ‘mistress’ to imply infidelity or dominance.”
The person is standing in front of the machine with their to us, reaching down for a power button as they say ‘okay, now let’s get you warmed up.’

4. “But either way, I’m sure I’ve given it more thought than he has.”
A close-up of the hand reaching for the power button, middle finger slightly extended towards us, posed the way one might if they were fingering someone (hopefully this is comes across in the drawings lmao)

There are a number of valid assumptions one could make about the people of No Man's Land—

"What kind of place is this, exactly, Stampede?" Meryl's voice comes from the front seat, deeply apprehensive, tone teetering somewhere on the border between suspicion and accusation.

Vash perks up from his backseat slump, turning his attention out the window, trying to gather some context clues as to what exactly set Meryl off. He scans across the dunes and finds nothing but the endless expanse of sand they've been rolling through all day long. He scoots forward, poking his head into the gap between the front seats, and spots it.

He stutters a weak, abashed little laugh.

—that they're lacking a sense of humor is not one of them.

Smack in the middle of the horizon, an ostentatious amalgamation of metal and plastic towers over the dunes. In two rows of larger-than-life, mismatched lettering it exclaims:

H A R D P L A C E

and underneath that, in a much more tasteful cursive:

ONLY SIXTY-NINE ILES TO THE WETTEST PLEASURE ON THE PLANET

An oddly oblong arrow-shaft lays across the top lettering, curving — drooping, really — over the edge of the 'H.' It ends in an obviously intentionally phallic arrowhead, its oddly shaped tip pointing the way.

Vash threads his fingers through his bangs, blinking at it like it might just be a mirage. Or a group hallucination. From behind, he hears the rustle of Wolfwood's slacks. His heat is then at Vash's back. A puff of smoke punches past Vash's shoulder as he chortles, ignoring Meryl's scowl and the hand she throws back to bat him and his offending cigarette away.

Wolfwood falls back into his seat, landing in his characteristic sprawl. His grin widens at the look on Vash's face.

"You know how to pick 'em, eh, Spikey?"

Vash splutters. "I— that's—" another nervous laugh, "well, you know how advertising is, salacious and sensational and all—"

"I swear, Vash, if you made me use my vacation hours to drive out all this way just to go to some, some seedy, sordid establishment of ill-repute in the middle of nowhere—"

"Aw, c'mon, shortstack! Even the fearsome Stampede's gotta get wetted down every now and again—"

Vash squawks, mouth gaping open at Wolfwood in shock. Wolfwood's grin widens.

"—are you really gonna deny the guy? Look at him, he's all pent up!"

"What?!? That's not—"

"Not to worry, Miss Meryl!" Milly interjects, "there's plenty else to do while Mr. Stampede is sowing his wild oats at the brothel!"

"Hey! No! Milly—"
