Video Wizards is a seasonal podcast about the arcade games of the 1980s and 1990s and their cultural context, by Ben Cartlidge, Michiel Kroder and Juli Reed. https://videowizardspodcast.com/

"So let's look at what was going on in the worlds of metal and hip-hop, in this period in time..." That's right, 2026 Ben & Michiel are currently looking back at their 1999 selves, for the recording of Video Wizards episode 33, all about that year's summer season.

Woop, gonna give both parts a listen - was waiting for this, I’m a binge listener not a serial guy 😆 Just as I’m getting back to running too - perfect 🫡

[💙M] One of my favorite video game marketing tropes is how many ads for arcade games — because they're meant to appeal to arcade operators in hopes of selling to them rather than to players — are more about how the game can make ***BIG PROFITS 💵*** for the arcade than about player fulfillment

"arcade games are just made to steal your quarters" is like some "contemporary art is just money laundering" type shit. dispense with these layer-two takes you heard from someone marginally smarter than you. play out run. get your cock out and play xevious. play mr. do!

40 years ago, Capcom's rootin' tootin' up-the-screen shootin' Gun Smoke hit Euro arcades. It was basically Commando with cowboys, with the player guiding hero Billie Bob through a variety of Western environments. Mucho baddies and power-ups ahoy made this a very fun shooter.
