Video Wizards is a seasonal podcast about the arcade games of the 1980s and 1990s and their cultural context, by Ben Cartlidge, Michiel Kroder and Juli Reed. https://videowizardspodcast.com/
"So let's look at what was going on in the worlds of metal and hip-hop, in this period in time..." That's right, 2026 Ben & Michiel are currently looking back at their 1999 selves, for the recording of Video Wizards episode 33, all about that year's summer season.
1 week from now, Ben & Michiel will start recording ep 33, all about the summer of 1999! Got things to say about #arcadegames like #SF3 3rd Strike, #Tekken Tag or F355 Challenge? The music, films and TV of the time? Send em to videowizardspod at gmail and become part of the show!

Now on our Patreon: Ben and Michiel explore a history of Atari's arcade game successes and failures in numbers. There will be quizzes in this one! www.patreon.com/videowizards...

So you are saying @mkstayontarget.bsky.social was there, he was in contact of what my childhood was even though I never set foot in Netherlands? Cool. Snake It was awesome. Everything Ronald Pieket Weeserik made was awesome. Hype had a BIG influence on me as a shmup developer.
Our @mkstayontarget.bsky.social was invited to the Local Dutch Institute of Sound & Vision to talk about preservation of his game Schildmaid MX. And while he was there, he got a tour of the massive media vaults... and stumbled across the works of the Byte Busters!
Essential literature, it looks like!
So buzzing to have penned two chapters for the book Arcade Adventures from @lostincult.co.uk and @harpercollins.bsky.social! • One chapter looking at shmups’ fascinating influence over the wider medium • Another on the how developers and players pushed each other to take shmups to wild new heights
Listening to @videowizardspod.bsky.social and I just realised the manufacturers of the High Stack might have been called Warp Factor 8 due to the quality of their timber

Anyone else got love for Tatsunoko Vs capcom? One of my favourite beat em ups of all time, just doesn't get enough love for how good it is #retrogaming #nintendo #capcom #wii
Lucky & Wild is not talked about enough as a bonafide arcade classic. Game rules.
[💙M] One of my favorite video game marketing tropes is how many ads for arcade games — because they're meant to appeal to arcade operators in hopes of selling to them rather than to players — are more about how the game can make ***BIG PROFITS 💵*** for the arcade than about player fulfillment
"arcade games are just made to steal your quarters" is like some "contemporary art is just money laundering" type shit. dispense with these layer-two takes you heard from someone marginally smarter than you. play out run. get your cock out and play xevious. play mr. do!

There you go, a 1CC of Gunbird 2 (Dreamcast) on. “Child” level 😅 That wasn’t too bad, actually. Didn’t break a sweat and only played a few runs. I can confidently graduate to “Very Easy” now. #shmup #retrogaming

40 years ago, Capcom's rootin' tootin' up-the-screen shootin' Gun Smoke hit Euro arcades. It was basically Commando with cowboys, with the player guiding hero Billie Bob through a variety of Western environments. Mucho baddies and power-ups ahoy made this a very fun shooter.
