I wrote a tribute for Bob Flanagan as part of a marathon reading in his honor today. Here's the text of what I read:

Dear Bob,

The least interesting thing you ever did was die. You died like people die; it wasn’t special; it wasn’t art. You’re not a saint of death, you’re not a saint at all. You weren’t suffering stoically and nobly, there was nothing mystical about you, you weren’t self-harming for any bullshit spiritual reasons, you were angry and you were defiant. You were so fucking mad at the world, your desire was being funneled through the narrow limitations of your body, and that desire was bigger and more ambitious than anything you could realize. And that wasn’t fair! You wanted to cum, you wanted to live, you didn’t resign yourself to death and you weren’t in any way dignified. You were messy, hard to live with, hard to love, needy, obsessively moral, full of ambition and lust and bitterness. It makes me angry to see your name invoked as if you were patiently waiting to die, letting yourself starve in some kind of solemn, anorexic, death-worshiping silence. You were corny. You were a goofball. I’m saying this pejoratively, you were an attention-seeking class clown. You could be actively annoying. I love this about you, I love this because you were a human being who wanted so much, so fucking much, and hated terribly that you couldn’t have it all.

Bob, I never met you. I only know you secondhand, through your work and through people who loved you. I was five years old when you died. Please forgive my addressing you so informally, because I know the discomfort that can arise when a fan feels like they know you, the real you, because they’ve read and connected with stuff you wrote, and art you made. I know that death and legacy flatten a person, and fuck… they’ve flattened you. You’ve become universalized, conceptual, instagrammable, palatable. You’ve become so nice in retrospect, which is ridiculous because you were such a hater! I love that about you, I love how much of your output was complaining. I wish I could talk to you about this tribute, about your naked contempt towards Roland Loomis and his culty bullshit, about the stuff you never got to finish, about how fucking unfair and painful it is to be a sick little bitch in a world that isn’t made for you. I wish you weren’t dead. None of your art is better for your being dead.
