"Trust community, not wealth" Holding power accountable on the open social web. https://woosh.link/wdonthavetime.selfhosted.social

Watching the #WSocial drama this week was entertaining, but it's a reminder: secure online identity is still unsolved, and we need it. My two cents: this isn't a job for companies to build or run. Innovation moves fast in private hands, but speed isn't what matters here. Trust does.

Was "somehow" transparent. As far I understand: Tech: W Social is a product that encloses open commons—taking open code and turning it into closed source, with a proprietary identity gate placed in front. Eurosky/Mu keep the standard open. W Social’s proprietary value proposition relies

I'd argue that they should have run a tender with rules and deadlines if they want it hosted externally, but that's just details. The bottomline is the missing transparency in the decision making.

Open protocols are supposed to create choice. But choice needs transparency. The European Ombudsman has opened an inquiry into how the Commission selected its AT Protocol platform. Public institutions should be able to explain their decisions. That’s good for everyone in the ecosystem.

UPDATE: W Social and the European Commission. The Commission moved its AT Protocol presence to WSocial with no public criteria published. The Ombudsman said that needs explanation: what criteria, and how were they assessed across platforms? Support us by getting a LeafPlaza account

Danke 🙏 #WsocialFacts #Widentity #Wned

Dear #WSocial verified users, who had your account verified after 16-09-2026: if you are not comfortable with your full name, nationality and approx. age being shared *outside* of W, on the open web, please DO NOT delete your account. You need to file a proper right of deletion request instead #GDPR

@wsocial.eu @anna.wsocial.eu I’m not happy that my approximate date of birth and nationality can be read by anyone in my W Social verification record. Please explain your legal basis for publishing it, and delete it. #WsocialFacts #GDPR

A waitlist survey tells you what users wanted. It is not a legal basis, it is not consent, and it binds nobody who verified in September. Any verified user can put all of the above to IMY in Sweden or their own data protection authority. That's Art. 77.

If you joined Wsocial and don't like your personal data displayed because you accidentally ticked that box, the only solution seems to be to delete your account. On the other hand, if you want full control of what appears on your profile join Bluesky, Eurosky, or any other PDS.

We understand that you may prefer not to share your age range and nationality publicly. If so, you can delete your account under Settings → Account → Delete account. You can read more about how it works and the reasoning behind it here: wsocial.eu/profile/wsoc...

We've been doing social media analytics for well over a decade, no other social media platform provided public age data per account like this Facebook has user_birthday but users must authorize the app to read their own data, not of any account! Have we not learned anything from Cambridge Analytica

i guess when your entire goal is to push something (mandatory ID verification and de-anonymisation) with a hell of a lot of political power and money behind it, it's only natural to immediately point the finger that anyone who doesn't like what you're doing must also be playing your game

W Social@wsocial.eu · 2w ago

As we have communicated. We did the update on Septemebr 17th. Now a question back to you @wdonthavetime.selfhosted.social Who have funded you and what is your connection to other PDS operators? What is your motive to create a site framing public information as a "data-leak" what's your motive?

This is our contention. Real consent requires a clear understanding of the implications. The atmosphere concept is new to most, and for general audiences, relatively complicated compared to previous paradigms. It is irresponsible to publish full names, nationalities and birth dates.

Its also not clear that when users are signing they're aware of how public this data is. They may have assumed the data is only visible to WSocial users. Pretty much anyone is able to see the data of anyone on WSocial.

It’s a strange position to be in, explaining that (gasp) sometimes people don’t do things just for the money. This is why the old models continue to fail us. The rich work only to seize more power and influence, and assume we all share this same view. Community matters. #ApesTogetherStrong

W Don't Have Time@wdonthavetime.selfhosted.social · 2w ago

This is incredibly easy to answer. Unlike #WSocial, we have no financial motivation or incentive. We care about people's privacy and safety online. We want to help W users understand how their data is being disclosed, and show just how readily available W has made their personal data.
