Unsoicited writing advice, no. 97: You don't need to descibe basic facial expressions. ("He smiled" works just fine: writing "his lips curled upwards in a smile," or "her freckles danced exuberantly over her puckish nose" or similar makes you sound like you've never seen a human face before.)

JLM's Holmes has to work hard, and learn new skills that are difficult for him. LL's Watson is clever, ambitious, driven, controlling, but is FAR better at both masking and suppressing her own needs than him. He teaches her how to be weird, she teaches him how to be in a society. That's interesting.

What I love about Elementary is that it's just a very interesting, complex take on what it means to be the kind of genius Holmes is - a recovering addict, neurodivergent, hyperobservent, both craving sensation and frequently overwhelmed - *and* to want to do good in the world, to be a good person.

The reason for this is Nolan doesn’t know how to be Weird, which is really what makes a bland Noir movie into Unforgettable Cinema. Its why Tim Burtons Batman stands the test of time And why the Nolan Batman dips. It’s why Pfeifers Catwoman is more Quotable than Hathaways. You HAVE to be Weird.

The problem with this entire thing is that the NYT wants to find some specific quality about Deep Springs and figure out how to replicate it, when the "success" of Deep Springs come from being weird, and you can't replicate weird, you have to figure out how to be weird on your own
