Fun fact: a medieval castle is being built right now! Guédelon Castle (near Treigny, France) is an experimental archaeology project that began in 1997 aiming to build a 13th century castle from scratch, using only period techniques. It's still ongoing, and everything is made on-site, even the bread!

Guédelon Castle as it was in 2017. Big part of the walls has been built since then, and they are working on the roofing of the towers now.

Mural paintings being added to the castle's Great Hall in 2012. They are inspired by 13th century murals in the nearby church of Moutiers-en-Puisaye.

Master builders installing one of the carved stones. Being experimental archaeology, the workers are not only using period materials, tools and techniques, but also are clothed accordingly.
