If youโre desperately hoping for rainfall in the south, unfortunately youโll be waiting for at least another week, possibly two, with another heatwave likely next week. Crossposted with @openvibe.social
July 2026 - the sunniest, driest and warmest July in the UK (when all combined) since at least 1910.
Earth is now warming faster than at any point in recorded geological history - around 10 times faster than the extreme warming event 56 million years ago and 20 times faster than at the end of the last ice age. We are almost certainly in a new extinction event.
Hurn recorded 381.1 hours of sunshine on the Kipp & Zonen recorder in July; this, corrected for a Campbell Stokes recorder, looks to be over 400 hours of sunshine - without doubt, the sunniest ever month recorded for any UK station on record. An absolutely extraordinary July.

With a maximum of โonlyโ 25.4ยฐC, today marks the first day since 3rd July that Iโve recorded a maximum temperature below 26ยฐC. The THIRD #heatwave here has finally come to an end after 28 days, my longest in records from 2009. However the #drought continues. Crossposted with @openvibe.social
@iconfactory.com A little birdy told me that posting might be coming to Tapestry? Or crossposting even? Is this exciting rumour true? Openvibe isnโt cutting it!
People whoโve lived in the area some 40 years say theyโve never seen the River Avon drop this low at Fordingbridge. I know I havenโt in 30. Yet the Gov UK website reports this as โwithin the normal rangeโ ๐ค
Bordeaux, France, has now recorded more days above 40ยฐC in 2026 alone than during the entire 105-year period from 1920 (when observations began) to 2025. This is deeply shocking.
โFresher air has swept across all of the UK, ending the hot spell for southern Britainโฆโ It was still >27ยฐC (81ยฐF) here today. Until very recently this would have been considered a hot spell! www.netweather.tv/weather-fore...
Southern heat retreats for the start of the weekend, but severe wildfire risk remains
Fresher air has swept across all of the UK, ending the hot spell for southern Britain. Warmer air returns for the new week, though less intense than recent heatwaves. The severe wildfire risk remains.

It seems very likely that Hurn (with corrections) will have broken the old UK sunshine record - the median corrected estimate looks to be 396 hours of sunshine, beating the Eastbourne record by just under 13 hours to the 30th. The sunniest month at any UK station in 115 years.

A lesson on kindness and compassion. And a useful reminder of the wisdom of Madeleine Albright in the comments.

My teams have completed all necessary checks and testing of the Cebreros station. After careful review, we have declared the antenna GREEN for nominal operations as of 27 July.
Based on current information, the Cebreros station appears to have remained unharmed. My deepest thanks go to the Spanish emergency services whose efforts helped protect the site as wildfires approached. Left: 24 July 19:57, Right: 25 July 07:54
