So far this year we've had: the warmest winter on record in the mountain west, a record-shattering heat wave in Europe, once in a thousand year rainfall and flooding texas and forest fire smoke blanketing the mid west and the north east. Feels like something's going on with the climate!

The worst parts of a career in journalism are bad (pay, general instability) but the best parts are so good. I get to call up the foremost expert in the world on a given subject and have them explain things to me? For my job?? I love talking to scientists who care deeply about the world!!

Quite frankly it is hard to romanticize your writing life when its 100+ degrees. A rainy fall day? Perfect, I’ll turn on all the lamps and light a candle and play some moody jazz while I write! A blazing summer day? None of that works! Any tips for setting a good ~writing~ mood during a heat wave??

RESULT: When Maryland adopted major restrictions on ICE earlier this year (we covered here: boltsmag.org/maryland-new...), just one Democrat in the state House opposed this: Delegate Frank Conaway. Conaway has been ousted by a wide margin in tonight's Democratic primary for HD40.

also not lost on me that as democratic socialists are winning some elections, a new red scare targeting anarchists, antifascists, and their allies is digging in hard, and today handed down 30, 50, and 100 year prison sentences to activists and organizers

NEW: Former city Controller Brad Lander and Assemblymember Claire Valdez cruised to victory over mainstream Democratic opponents in a whopping victory for Mayor Zohran Mamdani in two U.S. House primaries on Tuesday night. www.thecityreporter.nyc/2026/06/23/m...

Lander and Valdez Sweep to Victory in Win for Mamdani-Backed Candidates

Two mainstream Democrats fell to candidates backed by the mayor, as the marquee congressional primary in Upper Manhattan remained too close to call.

Is it that Mamdani’s a kingmaker or is that there’s a genuinely activated and motivated movement rising here? I think focusing on man, no matter how charismatic, might risk missing the wider picture of what a score of uncelebrated organizers have been building

Mamdani is close to going 3 for 3 in his Dem congressional primary endorsements, unseating two incumbents and one incumbent's chosen successor. This is a huge moment that confirms that progressive populism is not a fluke among the Democratic base, and Mamdani is the party's legit star and kingmaker.
