Now that everyone is taking a breath after Field Day, Friedrichshafen, National STEM Festival and Sail250, there's an outage upcoming. ARISS cross-band voice repeater and packet APRS radio will be out beginning Monday due to an ISS spacewalk.

🇨🇦 New to amateur radio. Learning to wield the dits and dahs. Something bright, & clever, & endearing/funny will be added here when I come up with it. She/her. 73! No to gen/ai. Yes to human creativity. (FYI - The Wimdy Fox photo is by Igor Shpilenok.😁)
Don’t be put off by the crackle and old timey vibe - these 1940s training videos are still great for learning basic radio concepts if you’re just getting into #HamRadio. youtu.be/6scwkpXZWEA?...

Had someone say there was nothing special about ham radio, since could just use a phone, or text message, or Facebook messenger to talk to people on the other side of the country, and the spirit of Bea Arthur was with me in that moment, good lord man FIND YOUR WHIMSY.

So here’s a question for long time ham radio folks - do you think hams who do informational YouTube videos are Elmers?
There’s something almost magical about flipping on the radio and catching the end of a net where folks are checking in from almost across the other side of the country. When you think of all the things that signal had to go through for us to receive it on the coast - just awesome!
Get ready for a superb pass of the ISS over Metro Vancouver (OK, BC/WA too) tonight, starting at 10:01 PM in the W, overhead at the handle of the Big Dipper at 10:06 PM, and contining to the E horizon at 10:10 PM. Very bright! Please RT.

Following on from my post from yesterday on Canada discontinuing their public weather radio in favor of an app that requires internet access. (Is it reasonable that now I’m wondering what that frequency is going to be used for, instead?)

Hey @mark-carney.bsky.social I know you’ve got a lot on your plate, but if you’re focused on sovereignty and security, we need to chat about the shut down of basic services like the Emergency Weather Radio in favor of an app that will not be accessible if our cell systems… youtu.be/5b0zw_sCyec

Well, I didn’t expect to see a fellow ham posting themselves from look-at-my-undies height beside their radio this morning. Never can be sure what the tabs will pull up on this site. Just gonna do a lil’ blocky block so I don’t have that sort of thing pop up like a tidy whitey jump scare again…
I’m gonna need the lonely experienced CW folks flinging dits and dashes into the ether to SLOW DOWN, just a smidge, so newbies can catch your greeting and hopefully respond in a less panicked fashion. 😭

Just going to put it out there that if your entire feed for more than four scrolls is just reposted skeets, I’m going to assume you’re a bot, and block you.
I feel like this needs to be said: if you’re trying for your ham radio license, and you’re struggling, ESPECIALLY if you have zero engineering or radio experience going into the hobby, I’m going to need you to close the ‘getting your license is SO EASY’ YouTube tabs, and give yourself some grace.
omg, awesome youtube essay alert this cinematic telling of how a bunch of radio nerds build and managed to launch into space a teensy little satellite for students and HAM radio enthusiasts. It finally died in the early 80s... ...only for it to somehow come back to life, again, 2002???

This video is awesome. 😆 I’m currently listening to a bunch of hams talking back and forth about this.
It’s official! We’re springing forward just one more time, and then we’re adopting permanent daylight savings time in BC. 🕰️ That means more sunshine and better sleep for people across our province.
Finally listening in on a nice clear net, and I’m begging our more experienced hams to say their call signs a tiny bit slower and clearer, especially those last two letters, which folks tend to rush or swallow. Us newbies are trying our best to quietly get to know who you are! 😅
Damn crackles. Just caught the tail end of a convo between two hams, and I missed one whole call sign, and the last letter of the other call sign, thanks to static. Made whatever the letter was sound like ‘monitor’. 😭 Anyway, hope the new appliances and car waxing go well for you, gents! 😁
Proud to say I have successfully adjusted a lovely little crochet pouch tutorial off YT to get it just the way I like for my Tamagotchi Paradise. Now I’m wondering if I could make a Baofeng cozy…
I can’t transmit yet bcs I’m still studying for my license, but I find just listening in so amazing - what do you mean Fred’s in Bellingham, and he’s QSOing w/Ben on the other side Canada? The little kid in me that never got to play w/walkie-talkies (bcs they were for boys) is constantly in awe. 😁

Could not be more proud of you, Team Canada. You’re coming home with 21 hard-fought Olympic medals. Though what Canadians will remember most is how you wore the Maple Leaf: with pride, with grit, and with determination.
First in person class today for our amateur radio license course, and we spent the morning building a ladder line roll-up J pole. Everyone was so enthusiastic, and kind, and I learnt so much bcs I had the most issues w/my project (I had a masterclass in soldering, let me tell you 😆). So much fun!!
Good luck to Crew-12 on their planned launch tomorrow! When they get on station, the Columbus module will triple the number of hams on station - with Adenot and Hathaway joining Chris Williams.
