Fabulous Ice Age spear thrower handle carved in the form of an animal. Known as the ‘Creeping Hyena’ it was carved from mammoth ivory around 15,000 years ago. The shaft is missing, but the hook to propel the spear is still visible. From La Madeleine rock shelter, France. 📷 by me #Archaeology

My photo shows an Upper Paleolithic spear-thrower (also known as an atlatl) carved in the form of a crouching animal, viewed in profile with head to left. Its head and neck are extended forward, low to the ground, and its legs are tucked beneath its body. It has a long downward curved tail, the pointed lower end of which ends beneath the body at lower right, forming the hook against which the tail end of the spear rests. The shaft of the spear thrower is missing. The ivory is a warm beige colour and is cracked with age in places. The sculpture is mounted on a thin metal support in a museum display case. It was found in La Madeleine rock shelter, Tursac, Dordogne, France. I saw this spear thrower on display at the Pompidou Centre, on loan from the National Prehistory Museum in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac.

84 years ago today, two naked canadian sailors successfully boarded and captured a U-boat while the rest of their crew threw coke bottles at it. turns out it's hard to defend a conning tower ladder when there's a sweaty canadian butt suddenly sliding down it at speed. an "out of context" problem.

What horseshit. She embraced gay people at the height of the AIDS crisis, embraced trans people at the height of the war against them, supported Black communities and artists, and wrote the most pro-worker's rights feminist pop song of all time. Neutral my ass

"At a time when no American celebrity seems immune from the country’s many divisions, Dolly Parton was a crossover icon who stayed neutral in the culture wars while still speaking her mind," writes Zachary B. Wolf. | Analysis

It is #Caturday and the Floof continues to be photogenic. Persist, but pause to gaze upon the floof. Remember that Nazis need punching, ICE must be abolished, Canada will never be the 51st State, alt text should be included in all images, trans rights are human rights, and all cats are best cats.

A longhair fluffy brown tabby snoozes, front legs sprawled out in front of her and one magnificent ear tuft well displayed.

I am not particularly interested in coddling the emotions of American citizens who find it hurtful to read that a Canadian thinks that they are part of the problem.
