'You'll choke too' - an aerial embroidery landscape inspired by all the wildfires happening right now... I'm upset every time I smell smoke outside and somehow we have people starting them maliciously too! But we all breathe the same air so they'll choke too (1/2 - see thread for close-ups)

Microsoft wants to build three massive AI data centres in Leeds. It’ll drain thousands of litres of water from the River Aire and become the city's biggest carbon emitter. We can still stop the council's final sign-off, but we need more voices. Add your name: you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/pr...
Stop the Microsoft AI megasite in Leeds!
Microsoft want to build three huge AI data centres at Skelton Grange. It would drain the River Aire and become the city's biggest carbon emitter. We can still stop it - add your name to the petition.

“…the same mechanisms that drive people to grow wary of — and hostile toward — friends, co-workers and family members with different political beliefs are beginning to shape attitudes toward AI.”
AI Adoption Is Dividing Friends, Families and Co-Workers
As artificial intelligence becomes ingrained in daily life, disagreements over the technology are increasingly becoming disagreements over values.

petitions.senedd.wales/petitions/24... Up to now, Wales has fortunately rejected calls for appalling badger culls. Please sign this petition against Reform (& possibly Plaid) proposal for pointless, cruel badger cull.
Petition: We call upon the Senedd to reject any badger cull in Wales.
England has slaughtered ¼ million badgers but STILL has a higher incidence of cattle TB breakdowns than Wales. Both countries have achieved reductions on all key metrics, but in Wales without any badger culling. Almost 95% of Welsh herds are officially TB-free, close to the lowest level in two decades . This is a cattle disease and cattle measures have been effective in both countries. There is NO scientific evidence to show that badger culling has played any part in reductions in England.

Hi Ryan. Liverpool Marina mute swan pair have 7 cygnets this year (the first photo was taken today, 25th July; the second is from the day I first saw them, 20th May) @swanwatchuk.bsky.social
I’ve been standing stock still in this wood for about 10 minutes while I mess about with a photo on my phone. I look up, notice the shape, and slowly crouch down to film This has made me so happy I feel I could cry. It’s as close to magic as I hope to get.
The building blocks of birdsong 🎶 "Birdsong is one of the natural world's most sophisticated forms of sound-based communication." "... each song is made up of combinations of these motifs: three types of trill, three types of whistle, chaotic notes and harmonies." www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Secrets of birdsongs' 'spectacular diversity' revealed
A scientific study has revealed the acoustic secret that connects all birdsong - and it is surprisingly simple

Went to Spike Island for the first time ever today to get a feel for the location. Very different to how I'd imagined it - which means a bit of a re-write of part of the current work in progress 🙄 Birds seen included mute swans with 8 cygnets, shelducks & ducklings, redshanks, swallows, etc.
Sad to see trees at Festival Gardens struggling due to heat stress and drought; and the liner in the largest pond has leaked for years, but now even the smaller ponds and the streams have dried up. 🤞 for some rain soon.
Carrion crows (Corvus corone) are estimated to have the reasoning ability of a 7 year-old human. They understand quantities up to 30, have a concept of zero, understand probabilities, can identify geometric regularity. But it's using CROSS-WALKS that really impresses me. (📷: Russell's Rescue)

Smoke from wildfires burning in the Peak District is visible on satellite images!
Fanned by a strong breeze all day, hats off to the firefighters dealing with a blaze that is several times the size of the adjacent communities. And to the local hospitality businesses who have taken in the evacuees. Sadly, climate change means this is the new normal.

Not a lovely sky tonight but an apocalyptic one full of smoke and ash, with wildfires raging across areas of Greater Manchester and North Wales. Thoughts are with everyone and everything affected.

Birdsong & the richness we’ve laid (are laying) waste to. An astonishing, heartbreaking demonstration of shifting baseline syndrome, & what I remember. Wrote about this @environment.theguardian.com + a real recording made in my village by a fierce & wonderful woman conservationist in 1975. 1/3

An #allotment bouquet (liberated from a very overgrown but once-loved plot that's being 'tamed' before it can be rented out again). A colourful reminder of two lovely people who have moved away 💐
Sat in the shade on the #allotment, then popped to a local church summer fair, where the highlights for me were the three peregrines watching over the festivities, then had a very quiet walk around Festival Gardens - probably because no one else was daft enough to be out at midday 🌞 🥵
