An old fir cone, crumbling at the edges, black and grey and spotted with the beginnings of lichens, with its scales opened out; some brown needles have fallen into the gaps. It is a Douglas-fir cone, which is usually apparent by the spiky "mouse hind feet and tails" that protrude from underneath each scale; but here, most of them have rotted away. The cone lies on a bed of yellowish, hairy moss.

A very tiny mushroom, rather like a tan dressmaker's pin. About 1.5 cm. tall. It grows on the forest floor, between fragments of moss and Douglas-fir twigs. The brown arrow shape at the top is one of the tiny "mouse tails" (so imagined) that hide beneath the scales of a Douglas-fir cone.

An area of stony ground; small to medium stones, mostly grey or brownish, with dried sticks and grass stems scattered over them. In front, out of focus, and hiding some of the stones, are reddish heads of dry roadside weeds. And somewhere in there, there's a Pallid-winged grasshopper, a darker grey than most of the stones, not quite blending in. (Look for its eyes.)

Round, pincushion-shaped mounds of moss on a sedimentary rock outcrop. Most of the moss is red or orange, even though it's been raining for days. Some is a dark green. And some has turned bright green, as mosses usually do when they're wet.

A cliff face, conglomerate rock, with some vegetation to show the size; cedar branches and salal leaves. A pale bluish white substance covers a large area of the rock, covering the rock matrix, the embedded stones and the holes where stones have fallen out. Around the edges, it branches out into a network of winding lines.

A cricket on a carpet. He's black, with reddish hints in his legs. Black and shiny. HIs forewings are deeply sculptured; he will be producing tonight's serenade by scraping one against the other, raising them to make a sound box. About 2 chirps per second, 62 decibels up close (in a midnight bedroom, for example). The two spikes at the rear are cerci; females also have a long ovipositor between them. Only the males sing.

Below the pool, the water rushes down over shiny rocks. Looking closely, raindrops are visible against the green of the pool. On the left, there's the trunk of a spindly fir; something to hold onto to prevent joining the creek far below.

Bluish white, lumpy, Cladonia lichens, green mosses (2 species), and really red, dried (and soaking wet) Douglas-fir needles. Two mosses; one smaller, a dull, yellowish green, the other, in the centre of the photo and above, brighter green, spiky.

A cellar spider, hanging from a wooden carving. She's light brown, with long, long legs with black knees. And a large, round abdomen, full of whitish lumps. I wondered if they were future eggs. Pholcus phalangioides.

And here she is a week later, up under a pale blue ceiling. Now she's skinny. And she carries a bag of round eggs in her mouth. She will carry them this way until they hatch. So the lumps in her abdomen were the makings of the eggs.

A large sunflower, half ripe; the petals are withered, but the seeds are still growing. It stands up under the eaves of a house (2nd story), bent over by its weight so that it faces the ground. It's surrounded by large, floppy leaves; speckles of pollen coat the leaf directly beneath the flower head. The stalk is thick, slightly hairy. There's another sunflower, still small, growing behind this plant, and the petals of a third at the far right.
The sky overhead is pale grey; there's a cedar tree on the far left.

Very small (5 mm or so) yellow flowers on thin, trailing stems. Very yellow, very shiny; 6 petals, yellow centres. The leaves are small, as thin as the stems; there are a few greenish seed heads forming. On grey, rough pebbles on a dry shore.

A robin resting on a bleached log with leaves (out of focus) overhead. The sun is bright and hot out in the open; here, the leaves provide a bit of cool shade. Underfoot, there are fallen leaves, dry and toasty brown; the forest soil in the background is dry and brown; it's too hot.

A Black Vine weevil on a red placemat. She* faces the left lower corner. Her compound eyes bulge out on either side of her long rostrum; there's a trace of spider web still there. One antenna visible, the other moving too rapidly. Note the feet; two furry toes, and a long central claw, good for grabbing and holding on. Behind the head, is the knobby pronotum. Her wing cases are grooved, black with tufts of yellowish hair.
*She; all black vine weevil adults are female; they reproduce through parthenogenesis. (Cloning)

Did u know? Bees(& many other insects)sleep in flowers. There's lots of reasons for this: the centre of a flower is warmer than surrounding air temp; convenience of waking up on your breakfast; predator protection from the flower colour/pattern camouflage; protection against bad weather. 🌿🌱🇬🇧🌱🌍🪲🐝
