" his voice is a soft whisper in my ear, "I know what this
looks like... this isn't what you think."
I shake my head, "You don't understand... I was there when they killed him... I didn't even try to save him." My lips purse, the disgust for myself bubbling up in my chest. "I'm sorry," I plead, Lukas' eyes shooting guilt at my soul and feeding off it.
The sorcerer moves between me and him, my face between his hands, "You wanted to leave a note to a stranger and apologise for his melted shower door.
You, novice, aren't capable of guilt." His forehead presses against mine. "You didn't run when you should have," the shadows are wrapping us, a screech makes my skin shiver, "You, Alenna, pulled me out of the afterworld with your shadow, and when I touch a shadow," he presses is lips so tight they turn white, breathing in, "I see everything." He closes his eyes, "And I saw no guilt, except for the guilt others put on you."
My lips quiver.

Hanna... my dear Hanna..." His fists clenched on his sides.
"Your... daughter?"
His head shook in slow motion, "Like one. She's the reason why you're here, the one
who opened that passage to your world."
"She did?" Vanessa reacted like a fangirl would react, hearing about her favourite
movie star. "How? Is she a mage? A witch?"
Julius scowled at her. "Don't say that!"
Vanessa bent her head downward, failing to understand what was wrong with her
words. "Sorry, I didn't mean to..."
"Never you mind. They sentenced her to death because they believed she was a witch
after she performed the ritual that opened that... door. We don't know how she did it, but she did. That's forbidden knowledge."
Her hands shook, her breath held in her lungs without managing to get out.
"You need answers," he insisted, "and you can find them here."
"Do I?" she said, "Julius, I don't know that I'm meant to be here. It's so easy to go

Me and Ophelia run downstairs, faster than we can, exchanging no words, except to call out for Klour, who's been in his weapon box all along, arms crossed, listening carefully to our words. We grab our silver blades, he takes a big spear with a shiny, silver tip.
Downstairs, the hall is empty, and the barrier is high and wobbling with raw energy at the door. I wonder how the concierge passed through it. I bet she's thought about this too in that split minute when she vanished.
A man is grabbing demons and throwing them against the energy as if they were stones. The demons burn against it.
"Can it hold?" I ask her.
She shrugs, her lips tilted to the right as she bites the inside of her cheeks.
The four lingers we called as reinforcement are siding us, reacting to our rushed plan. What is the plan anyway?
"We make them guide us to where they hold him, alright?"
I say out loud.
