I said this elsewhere, but I think campism is the default gravitational endpoint of "the left" for basic sociological reasons. Since "the left" has always been defined sociologically/coalitionally rather than on any principles or values per se, "leftists" will always return to coalition thinking.

So its effective implementations are going to be in low cost advertising and internet slop for people too impatient, and with ideas too inchoate, to make memes. I'd basically bet that it can not transcend this role regardless of possibly vast technical improvements to the base technology.

Then people with a more clear creative vision are bound to find it infuriating to work with a probabilistic algorithm to realize it. It probably requires *more* labour to get something good out of it, and force the appearance of deterministic consistency, so it's also not going to be economical.

because again, the limiting factor is not the imitative efficiency of the algorithm, it's that the people who are interested in it are creatively impoverished, possibly for reasons that are inextricable from the ease it is supposed to offer in engaging with creative work without skill.

AI will improve to the point that characters will be able to act naturally, it will be able to capture more angles, will be able to have more interesting aesthetics etc. Then people will be shocked to find out that the common output is nevertheless still the old dreadful slop anyway

altho speaking of "campism" it needs to be admitted that i've noticed a few of the voices who were against it ended up becoming campists themselves, just from the other direction. which is not really an improvement, is it.

And this is just so fucking weird to anarchists. Because like, sure those given arrangements or power loci in the present are bad, but we're longtermists: we're trying to overcome patterns of power that have enslaved humanity for at least ten thousand years, of which those are just epiphenomena.

Like if you look at the leftists who are most apoplectic at anarchists' hostility to campism, there's a palpable sense of confusion and betrayal from them. Don't we recognize there's Enemies that our Team must defeat?? The whole point is about defeating those Enemies and rallying power to do so!

So like, there is a very solid sense in which the leftists of the 80s-00s who screamed bloody murder about how Antifa was alienating potential neonazi allies against globalization and the leftists of today who want to ally with antisemites and theocratic empires are all totally in keeping with that.

"Everyone who sat on the left in a hall during the French Revolution" is not a statement of timeless universal values striking to the root of reality, it was a messy pragmatic and historically-contingent coalition (inclusive of rabid capitalists) all opposed to a situational enemy (the monarchy).
