Accredited zoo-based conservation breeding programs like the one at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo are a needed supplement to wildlife sanctuaries to preserve genetic diversity in these amazing big cats.

They also have reduced ability to "process" prey post-mortem, so their diet is restricted to smaller animals. Unfortunately, clouded leopards are considered Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with fewer than 10,000 remaining. One way to help save them: donations to reputable conservation groups.

It's Friday, & the world is nuts. But the eels still need help. So let's take a moment to learn something ridiculous. Did you know... Medieval Bristol charged eel merchants a fee of 3d per 100 eels. There was also a separate charge of 1/2d per 100 of fresh eel heads. 🗃️🧪

It's nostril horns are quite cute, and the expression on it's face could be read as surprise. And wouldn't you be surprised if you learned that: 1: your friends were being sold for food 2: sometimes it was just their heads that were being sold 3: everyone seemed to think this was just fine You would be horrified. And you can read some of that in the eel if you want. Conversely, it might have a scolding look, like a nanny at a playground staring at a rich dude who is smoking right next to the teeter-totter. She won't say anything, 'cause of power imbalances. But her eyes are full of words. Eels are hard to read, honestly. The two largest companies running for-profit ICE detention centers — GEO Group and CoreCivic — just reported a combined revenue of more than $1,400,000,000 in Q2 after signing more contracts with ICE. There should be no profit motive to put our community members in horrific detention conditions.

So I give you Deacon Caleb Cook, Princeton IL 1850s. Was a conductor on Owen Lovejoy's Underground RR. Put fleeing slaves under POTATOES so troops couldn't bayonet them. (Ugh but it worked.) Got everyone through. He was my GGG grandfather. Small note in history, but I carry on the tradition.
