In an obvious "Duh..." today: The people behind one of the biggest attacks on trans rights, under the guise of "protecting [cis] women" - don't actually care about women. In fact, their attacks on trans women's sports was indirectly gender affirming: part of their larger attack on women’s sports 🏳️‍⚧️

My god. The Heritage Foundation, which mercilessly attacked transgender kids in order to protect the "integrity of women's sports," is now attacking the legal basis for women's sports. The transgender student decision is barely 2 weeks old.

I hate when people say Tu B'Av (today) is like the Jewish Valentine's day. It's far older, and higher regarded 🤷‍♀️ According to the Mishna (2nd century), it's as big as Yom Kippur, and no other holidays are as big! "There were no holidays for the Jewish people as great as TU B'Av and as Yom Kippur!"

The mishna cites a passage that concludes its discussion of the month of Av, as well as the entire tractate of Ta’anit, on a positive note. Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel said: There were no days as joyous for the Jewish people as the fifteenth of Av and as Yom Kippur, as on them the daughters of Jerusalem would go out in white clothes, which each woman borrowed from another.

This argument from the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations against saying Israel is guilty of genocide in Gaza explicitly makes the argument that we should simply ignore the public statements of major figures in the government like Smotrich and Ben-Gvir.

Conflating Judaism and Jewish people with the State of Israel actively makes Jews less safe. That goes both ways: - Targeting Jews for the actions of the State of Israel, past and present. - Just as importantly: claiming that critiques of the State of Israel are antisemitism makes Jews unsafe.

It’s embarrassing that the rabbi of Central Synagogue - one of the most prominent Reform rabbis in the US - is portraying Mamdani’s accurate description of Netanyahu as a war criminal as a sign of antisemitism. This is part of why young people take antisemitism less seriously than they should.

It's the "let's eat eggs spiced with ash" time of year 😭🥚🔥 On a serious note: may we have a meaningful Tisha B’Av, whether through fast, mourning, and any other way we mark this day. May we remember what the rabbis teach us (ER 4:14), that this isn't just about the destruction of the temple.
