Perpetually linking ICE activity to mid 20th century Nazism misses over a hundred years of US immigration law based on racial exclusion AND the very real policies of US empire both domestic and abroad. The US held Haitian asylum seekers in detention camps in Cuba for years as recently as the 90s.

When you pass the buck of American imperialism to the German Nazis, you don't just draw attention to how bad the US has become, you exonerate both the Nazis and the historic imperialists/authoritarians of your own country, since the former were inspired by the latter.

bc some people in the replies seem to think the batman messaging is good and correct: starting with "we must accept this necessary evil just this once in extraordinary circumstances" is what LEADS to "this is just part of life now" these aren't opposite messages, they're steps on the same path!

the wikipedia article "Official Cantonese translations of English names for British officials" has a fairly long section about how one english governor got his name translated to toilet bowl and this motivated setting up a translation service for names

The 16th Governor of Hong Kong, Sir Reginald Stubbs, was first given a particularly distasteful Cantonese translation for his name. 史塔士 or Sí Taap Sí was the original Cantonese translation, literally meaning "history; a tower; a vassal". However, the first and the third characters of 史 and 士 share the same archaic pronunciation of the character 死 (sí), meaning "to die", and more troublesomely, the same pronunciation of the character 屎 (sí), meaning "shit".[10] Also, Cantonese speakers sometimes call a toilet bowl 屎塔 (sí taap), being homophones to the first two characters of his newly translated name.[5] Thus, Stubbs's first Cantonese name translation rendered a wide variety of somewhat unpalatable translations and interpretations, like "toilet bowl's shit", "shit tower's death" etc.[11]

Pax Silica discourse is cursed bc the metabolic necessities of the nation is equated with that of the people under it. Capitalism is both a developmental and immiserating force. This contradictory logic is inherent. To combat the immiseration, you must combat development.
