The most terrifying enshittification I've discovered has been learning that Microsoft Word documents no longer auto-save if you are not saving them to one of their own proprietary cloud services. I'm slapping control-S like it's 1999.

it's one of those days where I only really want to stare at old computers
Oh yeah you know I am edgy and hardcore because there are characters in my name that are NOT ALLOWED on the Australian census Ain't nuthin' but an é thang
So the Anthropic chatbot saw the system date is 2026 and concluded that "this must be staged" (because the training data it's trained on probably ends in 2023 or whatever) and ignored it's instruction that "you're in sandbox". Truly the brightest minds of a generation working on this stuff.
When you're excited about a new project but then you see this
Funnily enough, Sam Altman states that the AI singularity will keep happening whenever his company needs press coverage
In 1960, Herbert Alexander Simon stated that AI will “do all human functions in organizations within much less than 25 years.” This guy was celebrated and won a Nobel prize and the Turing award.
For many years, people didn’t randomly film others in public—not because we didn’t have the technology, but because the social contract said you didn’t do that. That’s why Meta is going full court press on their PR and celebrity endorsements. They remember how people ran google glass outta town.
Fun fact: To keep production costs low, many Star Trek scenes were actually filmed on Earth rather than on location in outer space.
Listen, if you are a designer or developer and this is what you come up with as the cancellation UI, please leave the industry.
I don't like how tech news that used to get me excited doesn't anymore. I miss when computers were fun.
Shipping fast only matters if you're shipping the right thing to the right audience.
Imhex is really neat for inspecting binary files, but it's a pain working in an app with a non-native interface so not even text fields work like expected. It's like you have to relearn all shortcuts from scratch 🤦♀️
Increasingly feels like the fluid nature of software is more a hellish trap than a feature Like having people break into your house every night to rearrange your furniture, reprogram the tv, and swap out family pictures for stock photos and ads
Why, why, WHY @adobe.com would you add such a useless and annoying thing to Acrobat? Who the H wants to share that text via whatsapp? Has anybody figured out how to disable this? My search only showed ppl are annoyed with it and a pseudofix for Mac.
This might be a dumb question, but what's the benefit of woff/woff2 compressing tables when web servers usually compress HTTP responses already?
Every UX designer knows how much users LOVE when all their shit moves around for no reason
Taco Bell is experimenting with an AI-driven menu board, which will use the technology to “dynamically change the layout, content, and visuals on a car-by-car basis.” Read more from @emroth08.bsky.social:
It's extremely frustrating how Notion has change the shortcut to copy a link to the page to copy a link to the currently selected block (which there was a shortcut for already). Unless you select the title you will always get a link to the block the caret is in 🤦♀️

You’ll miss the soul when it’s gone
Pretty grim day of news in the industry today, with Salma Alam-Naylor stepping away from developer relations work permanently, Josh Comeau taking a sabbatical from making courses and GSAP’s once-vibrant forums descending into a ghost town. The reason your token guzzler “produces” anything that could be described as “good” is because of the years of […]
